Lightbulb My semi-trailer long term project

I bought Richard Blizzards Wooden Toys book back in the early 90's and some of my students made projects from the plans in it. I started making the logging truck back then and got as far as making the chassis for the truck only. It wasn't until about 4 or 5 years ago that I decided it was time to pick up and finish it.

Still a haphazard approach I admit, but I'm getting there. Finding suitable wheels was almost impossible and I've had to settle for single driver and trailer wheels the same as the front ones. They look good anyhow.

The chassis and fuel tanks are made from NZ Rimu, the trailer chassis rails are made from Oregon, and the rest is mostly Silky Oak harvested from my neighbour's property. Sleeper doors are PNG Rosewood. I really wanted to make the trailer a Pantech unit with curtains, but making all that would require far more work than I was prepared to attempt. Lazy? Maybe. I opted for making a plywood box with double container style doors at the rear. I still have to make the locking bars etc once I figure out the design of them. The hood adornment will be a cast aluminium bulldog that I made back in the 90's. I'm proud of that achievement.

Will post updates when I have something more to show. I don't know what I'll do with the finished project. We don't have room to store or display it unfortunately. Perhaps I can sell it to a Mack dealer? Putting a price on it will be difficult as there's so much work in it . Still lots more to do... fiddly bits like mirrors, windscreen and windows, wipers, horns, exhaust stacks etc. The steering unit also needs to be modified to accommodate the wide wheels. I've thought of making it a radio controlled toy which would be great to play with! If anyone has suggestions feel free to offer them.

Thanks Crowie. Though it's been a long time in the making I have enjoyed working on it. The wheels... I can't remember whom I bought them from but it was online. I'll hunt through my paperwork and try to trace the source for you. They're soft foam filled tyres. Try looking up this item number on eBay: 252333274386. Very similar to mine.

The dog I made by carving a piece of sacrificial foam into shape, then setting it in a sand mould for pouring the molten metal. I made two just in case one failed, but they were both successful! That doesn't happen very often!!

The tree I felled myself and had to take it up to Mittagong to get it milled, for $250 which I thought wasn't a bad price. I have two 2metre edge slabs about 300mm wide to sell, plus a selection of 100 X 25 and 150 X 25 boards. I also have two sets of 70 X 70 x 400 legs for coffee tables that I'll put up for sale too.
