Hi All,
For the last week I have been working on the crosshead feedwater pipework that sits beside the right hand piston cylinder.
The components I turned out of aluminium and then pinned and araldited the right angled legs into position. I used a round file and then a half round file to get the shape of the round bar I was joining. I then used bodyfiller to create a fillet and then filed and sanded off with various grades of paper.
The flanges were made of MDF and I used 1.5mm cardboard as my flange gaskets.

Below is a photo of the pipework in it's correct position

Hi All,
The next step was to make up the crosshead feedwater pipework. I thought this would be relatively easy using PVC solid as my pipework but it turned out to be a real pain. Lots of PVC thrown in the bin. It was difficult getting the correct radius of the top of the pipework.
I turned up a fixture out of pine with a groove to accommodate the "pipework". I then drilled the "pipe" in one position and secured it to the fixture. I the used my hot air gun to soften and bend the PVC. This did not end well. Very poor shape and radius. I then thought that if I drilled around the entire bend and secured with nails as I went that should work out OK. No good because the PVC retained too much heat and was still partially elastic when I took the nails out.
Normally I let any PVC that I have softened with the hot air gun - quench in the ambient air. This required me to quench with water each time I heated up the pipe after I inserted each nail. This solidified immediately and the radius was retained.
When I removed the nails - filled up all the holes with bodyfiller. I again used the hot air gun to get the angle of the pipework so i could attached it with a flange to the boiler.
Regards
Keith

If it is not messy, nothing is being done.
Keith was just going around the bend on this occasion.
