Keith, I’m so pleased your computer man recovered all your data.
Please good friend, get an external hard drive and back even other month plus refresh the hard drive every 3-5yrs as my computer bloke told me.
The paint work is looking so good sport!
Cheers Peter

Thanks for the reminder.
Hummm!!!
I may need to upgrade some parts myself as I built mine about six years ago and plenty fast enough but would hate to miss some postings as I rebuild a sick computer.

Hi All,
I have done some re-assembly after painting.
The main subframe and the drive mechanism. I mucked up a bit yesterday. Pretty confused - I couldn't get the cam assembly into it's correct position. I spent 2 hours mucking around trying to get it to fit. I came in and looked at my photos I had taken and posted on line. Finally realised I had the front drive wheel bearings in upside down . Had to have a laugh at myself

I have also been working on the smokestack of the locomotive. On this build I have decided to do hand painting (subframe, firebox etc ) and spray paint (smokestack, manometer gauge etc). I can thoroughly recommend a spray paint I have been using. It dries super quickly and gives a really nice "hard" finish - it is called Dulux dura max high performance enamel - I used Satin White. It is not the cheapest paint around (about $12 a can but gee it is good) I sanded 240 grit between coats.
I have also made up the Manometer gauge on the side of the smokestack. I added the numbers using labels you add by rubbing on the front of the number. It is available at Kaisercraft or Spotlight - very handy - in the old days I think it was called "Lettraset". The alpha and numeric come in different sizes per pack

I am pretty happy how it is all starting to come together

Now you understand why you take lots of images during the build, post them on the forum, before you go pulling them apart.
If it gets you out of a bind once then it has been worth it.
Keith next week you might try a 1:1 machine for dismantling and painting. Great job. Its coming up great.

Pete,
There are heaps of errors and mistakes in my version of the "Rocket". Thanks for your kind words but I could write pages of things that are wrong with this build. Paint does cover up a lot of issues - fortunately.
BUT - I am happy with my progress and I am loving this build. The engineering aspect of the "Rocket" is enjoyable and does bring back memories of my trade background.
I think one of the main things the master once told me was to "try out new stuff you haven't tried before which opens up new avenues on how to approach making different components." (Body filler and spray painting come to mind immediately), but "the main thing is to enjoy what you are doing and try to do a little better with each build". (Good onya Trev)
Anyway - onto more painting tomorrow and maybe a bit more assembly work.
Regards
Keith

Hi All,
I have been doing some more touch up painting and then fitted the brass rings around the boiler. You may remember that I made these "rings" out of some PVC square downpipe I had lying around. The good thing is that the super gold spray paint I use doesn't crack when rolled around the circumference of the boiler. The Rings are secured at the bottom by countersunk woodscrews. The top section is held in place on the boiler by 5 minute araldite. Luckily I had a third "ring as I mucked one up.
Doing a bit of final assembly of the base and boiler structure now.
Regards
Keith
