    Hi,

Doing a bit of wood turning - making the main drive wheel outers and inners. The Rocket has a hub on the inside of each drive wheel so have incorporated this into the inner (spoke) section.

Next part is to glue on my sketched up spoke drawing and cut the spokes on the bandsaw.

    Regards

    Keith

    Hi,
As you say it is sad when these things happen but much worse when they are people you know or were competing against a couple of days ago.
A quick recovery to them all.
    Regards
    Hugh

Wheels looking good you are getting the hang of the lathe for making the wheels

    Thanks Derek,

Lots of wheels on all the locos and tenders.

The faceplate is a terrific woodlathe attachment

A very much underused piece of lathe equipment is the faceplate as many now tend to go straight for chucks. I for one have a chuck fitted 70% of the time and when faceplate work is required I have a plate that fits into the chuck

    I little tongue-in-cheek

Just wondering if your 6:1 scale is based on the capacity of your lathe?

    Ian,

You are pretty much spot on there.

That is why the Stirling Single was 1/7th scale to accomodate the "8ft" main drive wheel. Would love a larger swing lathe but doubt whether Cathie would like larger scale locos.

    Hi All,

Cut out the spokes on the bandsaw.

Then drilled the internal circumference of the outer rim. The Rocket had bolts retaining the steel rim to the wooden main wheel rim.

I have also drilled the faces of the outer wooden rim. These are for the 24 rivets on the face of each wheel.

Now gluing the spoked section to the outer rim. Then can get into the filing and sanding of the spokes.

    Regards

    Keith

    Hi Keith

I really enjoy following your builds.
By any chance do you do any historical research around the locomotives you model?
The reason I ask is my expectation is that the original Rocket would have used a combination of cast and wrought iron. So I'm curious what parts of the original warranted the use of steel.

The other area of interest is -- I've seen references to locomotives being fitted with "tires". I wonder if the "tires" were a steel band shrink fitted to a cast iron wheel. Do you know if this is so?
    regards from Alberta, Canada

That is my understanding. Some kind of steel tire fitted over the rim.

If my memort serves me correctly part of the issue of a high speen rail accident in Europe? was to do with a tire coming loose and shooting thru the cabin

    Default Fitting a tire

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9L3oaA-nxzY
I think this short video might explain a lot.

Wooden wagon wheels have a metal tire shrunk on them. probably similar to how Rocket was built. As metals improved the driving wheels became castings with a tire shrunk on. Other wheels are solid with the tire profile turned.

Another longer video is this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Z4G7BMUCm8 There are many others around. At Puffing Billy, an induction heater is used when re-tiring. I have a couple of images if required.

    Thanks guys

    Impressive videos Kevin.

It also appears as though the steel tyres on Rocket were retained by bolts through the wooden wagon wheels . Must have been countersunk on the running rim. (Will need to ask Fletty about that and what he saw at the museum)

It appears that the trailing wheels were cast iron with very thin tyre profile

    Regards

    Keith
