    Thanks Derek,

I found some very small hinges at Bunnings (local retail chain in Australia) They are spot on for the scale of my carriage.

    Thanks for your help

    Hi All,

I have been working on the chasis frame for the carriage. As I did with the locomotive and tender - I have used aluminium as my frame material. It looks a bit more prototypical and also adds strength to the carriage. You cannot really see it in the photos but all the longitudinal lengths of aluminium are angles. This will help prevent any bowing when the carriage is finally built and the seats and interior is added. All joints are done with screws and nuts and the main joints were no movement is allowed are also doweled with 2mm wire through the 2 pieces of material.
I have started on the leaf springs (foreground). They are a lot longer than the locomotive or tender.

Have included a second photo with the loco to give an indication of the size of the carriage.

    Regards

    Keith

Looking good!!! and wow it's as big or bigger than the train and tender combined.
Is the frame riveted or nut and bolt construction?

    Thanks Bruce,

Nut and bolt and dowel construction. Will fill in any countersunk heads (that can be seen in the finished product) with bodyfiller so the phillips head cannot be seen.

    Hi all,

Still working on the chasis of the carriage.

Have made up the bearings, leaf springs and coil springs. I machined up the axles out of 25mm solid aluminium. I am now making up cover plates to cover all the protruding screw heads on the top of the chasis so I will have a flat surface to which I can secure the carriage floor.

Have included a photo of the Rocket to indicate the carriage size.

    Regards

    Keith

That is going to be just right and set off the train nicely Even though it would be nice to have a open carriage as well I personally think it would then make it too large as a show piece

    Hi All,

Working on the carriage buffer system with the cylinder mechanism at the centre on each side (see arrow on photo below)

    209.jpg

I was not sure how I was going to get the cylindrical section as shown. I then remembered what an old mate of mine once said - "it doesn't matter what it looks like on the back where people can't see - only try and get the viewing side as best as you can"

I cut a piece of 40mm PVC tube in half to get the outer cylindrical section and made up some inner packers on this so I could have something to secure to.
Then I laminated some scrap radiata pine and turned it in the wood lathe to suit the bore of the pipe. Then into the metal lathe to drill for the cylinder shaft and the compression springs using forstner bits. These became my cylinder "ends".
Then secured my top and bottom runners to the "cylinder". Filled all my securing screw countersunk heads with bodyfiller so they won't be seen when I prime paint. Still a lot of sanding and cleanup to do before prime painting, but the last photo gives a bit of an idea how it will look. Pretty happy so far.

    Regards

    Keith
