Hi All,
I based the scale of the "Rocket" I was to build on the diameter of the boiler. I was always going to use PVC pipe as my boiler. The 162mm OD of the PVC pipe works out exactly the scale of the Rocket (probably a bit of cheating there. I needed to make up brackets to support the boiler and get the correct angle of the tops of the brackets so they would be flush with the longitudinal sections of the boiler. I also needed to ensure I had sufficient clearance of the eccentric motion assembly. (There is 10mm clearance). The back end of the boiler (closest to camera in the photo) has pipes and flange assemblies - which I will make up next - that also help to support the boiler.
The Rocket boiler is clad with timber. I will be cutting up Tasmanian Oak to make my cladding boards.
Happy with the progress as the boiler support section was one of my biggest concerns from the outset.
Regards
Keith

Hi All,
Made up the pipework and flanges for the back end of the boiler.
Flanges made of 6mm MDF whilst the "pipework"is 12mm solid round aluminium. Got the angle of the "pipe" by putting the round bar in a vyce and me on the end of a 1.5m long piece of pipe.
Been so hot here today - thought I would show size comparison with a can of beer.
Regards
Keith

Hi All,
Hope everyone had an enjoyable Christmas.
Before I can line the boiler - I needed to start work on my drive cylinders so I could work out the securing points of the cylinders to the boiler.
I have screwed timber attachment points inside the boiler so I can secure to the internal timbers at the required points.
The cylinders are PVC pipe 65mm OD. I had some difficulty in working out how to make the cylinder attachment brackets (they are a weird looking set of brackets). I was originally going to use PVC but that didn't look right. I made up the 4 brackets using 19mm pine. I cut the brackets out on my scroll saw. I attached them through the cylinders with countersunk metal threads. I have started making up the steam inlet boxes and flanges (you can see them better on the far side cylinder that Cathie is holding in position in the photo).
Once I have done the work on the steam boxes - there is a plate that I need to make - that secures to the boiler following the 45 degree incline of the cylinders.
Too hot to do any more work in the shed today - 38C - so I will watch the cricket.
Regards
Keith

Hi All,
Hope everyone has a fantastic and safe New Year.
Been working on the top section of the drive cylinders and the "back head rocking shaft assembly" that spans across the 2 drive cylinders.
Needed to work out something that would look like the original bearing / support bracket for the shaft.
Made the vertical section out of timber and the bearing section out of aluminium. I then drilled 2mm in each part and joined them using a 2mm piece of wire (araldited into position). I then covered the gap in bodyfiller. Then using needle files - I shaped the fillet between the vertical section and the bearing. I still need to smooth the primed parts with a finer grade sandpaper.

The photo below shows the what I am up to with regards to the main drive cylinders. Still lots of work to do on these. Need to get the cylinders done so I can work out the main attachment points on the boiler.
