Cool Themed Rat Rod - Inspired by Reapers Rejects

Around Christmas time last year I had to figure out what is the project I want to make, as for past 2 years I managed to build a train, so it turned out as a little tradition for me. This time I felt another train would be so boring to make as I would quit making it half ways. So I went online for scouting on some ideas and found this cool themed rat rod by Reapers Rejects based in Jordan, New York. It perfectly fitted what I was looking for, unique, unusual, never seen. I got in touch with Amy from RR, gathered some intel and completely felt their madness in building these rat rods. This is where it all started and based purely on images and my own imagination I set myself to build something cool. No measurements from actual RR rat rod used, only whats in pictures.

    Default along came frame

At the very beginning I worked out what size wheels I will need on front and back, their position in width and wheel base, seating area in cabin...and the rest went from there. This frame is very interesting to me as in real life it is constructed from 2 separate frames, linked together with 1 bolt on each side nearly in the middle of rear frame and rests on sheet springs at the front.

    Default V12 from V6

Once cabin constructed work on engine and its components can begin. As original model has Chevy small block V6 I started from there with some drawings for it printed from online. Had to scale it up to desired size. Front end on my model is longer so I took creativity in my hands and made V6 in roaring V12. The rest can be seen in pictures. You will notice that I left holes for pistons in engine block, that is with idea to have it running with wooden crankshaft sometime down the line. At the moment its purely for looks when top parts of block is removed.1.jpg2.jpg3.jpg4.jpg5.jpg6.jpg7.jpg8.jpg9.jpg10.jpg

I'm afraid I would be overconfident at that stage and make it double that

    Lightbulb Front suspension and exhaust

Trying to figure out front suspension was great fun. Every single part seen in pictures have its role in holding everything together.
Horse head lookalike 2 parts in last picture are holding down steering bar(my term). Steering bar holds down entire wheel with help of control arms that are attached to steering knuckle. Steering knuckle has pivot points horizontal and vertical. Vertical allows wheels to turn left and right and horizontal allows wheels to turn forward/backward. Steering knuckle is joint permanently together with disc that serves as wheel stabilizer/holder. Both front wheels has pins in the length so that they can go through disc, pass upper part of steering knuckle and have space for wooden v shape nut. Disc is made wide enough to hold pin from wheels as straight as possible with minimal play. In between disc and wheel there is smaller disc, made of hardwood, to act as sliding plate. Sliding plate allows wheels move much more without resistance as only few millimeters in diameter of hardwood are used to rub against wheels back, which is painted black. As there is couple of moving parts this steering system can be dismantled in 8 separate parts. Best thing that all of them are held together only with 2 v shape nuts (hardwood) at the end of each pin from wheels and 2 horse head lookalike parts. Wheels are basically lifting whole suspension up from steering knuckle vertical axes, to avoid this, horse heads are holding it down in position. Hey presto, my steering system.
