    Default Timber Combination Selection.

    Hi All,

I'm working on two toy planes and need some advice with the choice of timber. I've made the bodies and am finalising the wings. My question is:

What do you think of the timber combos? Would you go Blackwood body with Blackwood wings or Huon pine wings

    or

Huon body with Huon or Blackwood wings?

    See attached pics. Thankyou!IMG_7229.jpgIMG_3101.jpg

If it was me I would stick with Blackwood on Blackwood and Huon on Huon.

I would also add that I think the Huon needs something else added, colour, strips just not sure.

    Yes Lewis,
For my money, the Huon Pine on the Blackwood and vice versa is too wide a contrast, that of black on white and white on black....

Try to use a range of different colour & grained timbers that only slightly contrast that is offset each other, rather than, in my opinion, clash.

The very light and the very dark are good timbers to highlight particular aspects or items in the toys build....

I hope that's come out okay, apologies if I've been too harsh....
Let me balance my constructive comments with some encouragement....
You've made a couple of very nice wooden toy planes for some very lucky youngster, keep the photos coming please...
    cheers, crowie

Thanks for all your suggestions.I'll be going with the same body and wings combo - I don't have much of this timber left so I'm trying to make it count!Crowie - Not harsh at all. I was thinking the contrast was a bit much and just needed some pushing toward the right choice.

A lot of choosing what woods to use can be down to personal preference. The hardest part is trying to see how the contrast looks with a finish on it. Try planing one surface and then wetting it with water to give a better idea.
I agree that too much of a contrast can make the model glare a bit.
At the end of the day it is about what the child thinks of the toy and how much their imagination can run wild that matters.
