    Default Tom's Toy Garage

Inspired by some of the toy garages on this forum I decided to build one for my 2 year old son who is crazy about cars. I adapted some plans I found on this forum (can't find the post link but it was from a 60's woodwork book) and some garages others had built. I opted to leave out the lift from this plan but loved the small petrol pumps and the showroom.

I had read lots of good things about Google Sketchup so decided to have a go at doing up the plans as a 3D model. Was really surprised how easy it was to use and was great for reference when building the garage. I printed out various angles with all dimensions displayed.

Below are a few images of the plans I ended up going with. I will upload some images of the finished project as well. It took me a couple of weekends to build (used 9mm plywood) and paint and am really happy with the result.

Thanks. I grabbed a bunch of logos from the internet and then printed them out on self adhesive ink jet paper. Couldn't find self adhesive paper for laser printers locally or any of the waterproof sticker paper which I wanted. Not sure how long they will last in the hands of a 2 year old!

Back when my Grandad used to make this garage, he would go down to the local servo and buy the stickers. Times change and I'd be surprised that you could still get them nowadays.

Great job J8B, especially on the detail.

Wonderful little garage for a little boy. I saw a tip when a bloke built a canoe and used overhead projector paper to print on. He then painted on a layer of clear varnish to the bow of his canoe, then laid on the printed name on the O. P. paper, which is clear of course. He then used a hard roller to flatten it and remove air bubbles, and then over coated with more clear varnish until the paper could no longer be seen, just the print.

You could go over yours with clear varnish and even just a PVA glue, which sometimes dries out to be clear.

BTW, will this size be in proprtion to Hotwheels and Matchbox cars?

Not sure if its exactly to scale The matchbox cars fit into the parking spaces and can drive through the door ok. Running the cars down the ramp and parking all cars on the roof seem to be the most popular games at the moment.
