The coconut oil gives a nice finish.

I have plans to create a teething ring/rattle so some bright colours would be preferable.
From what I've read Water based acrylics with a couple of clear coats should do the trick.

Rock Maple which is what all the similar items from the USA were saying they were, plus did a little research to confirm it was the right timber for teething rings...

Is imported timber subject to the usual chemical sprays at customs, or is it heat treated?

Just curious as we have another grandchild on the way.

No idea George on the chemical spraying of imported timber as I was given the Rock Maple as old offcuts.
The plans were my eldest daughters research from the internet of others that were for sale.

If you have not yet found a solution Mark, you may want to consider the Livos timber stains, especially the Kaldet transparent wood stain #270. it comes in vibrant colours and with a full ingredient disclosure, you know what you are using. The Kunos #244and #243 are both certified food and toy safe though. Whatever product you source, try to ensure it has no added "nasties" though.

Livos Kunos is fantastic as a finish. I use it prolifically, on everything, as a default. My only concern would be that it is a bitter as hell. The Kunos is a super sour/bitter solution, I wouldn't think an infant would enjoy sucking on that

Perhaps consider plain old mineral oil. Its 100% food safe, tasteless, odourless and preserves things well. Here is where I get mine: https://foodgradeoils.com.au/product...e-mineral-oil/
