New toy over the christmas break.
Hi guys, haven't been posting much on the forum lately but I am still here. This is what I am working on at the moment a rocking/swing horse. Not anything like wongo's horses but I am happy with it so far. I tried to keep it as simple as I can. No carving required.
Had a bit of a problem getting the swing irons just right but after several attempts and $50 worth of ruined steel rod, I finally made it.
You will note that I am installing the swing irons through the top rail of the stand instead of using brackets. (couldn't locate any proper brackets here in Australia) I did this by slicing the top rail through the middle along its length after I drilled the hole for the irons of course. The top rail will be screwed back together when I finally install the swing irons. I am not sure if I am going to use a wearing bush or strip for the irons yet or just let the irons burnish the timber and harden is as it is used. Not sure how that will work out. Same with the hoof rails. no bushes as yet.
I neglected to turn a spiggot on the two posts when I made them but I overcame this by using a dowel joint and will be glued in place and then screwed from underneath for strength and stability.
I have mainly used pine for the project but the seat is something else, not sure what.

I want a ride on this one please John...
Just a thought, is it worth while adding a sleeve for the swing rides to run in or is it all glued & screwed??
I was given a 100yr old one to repair/restore..watching with interest.
Thanks for the WIP photos & notes.
Cheers, crowie

You have been a busy fellow John so far so good. I am on board to see the finish it'll be a winner for sure.
Oh like the little train and stuff along the bench too.

Looking good, will you paint it or leave it natural wood and just varnish it. I used brackets with mine for the rocker arms and a flat piece of bar to stop wear in the wood. What is the stand made from, is it a good hard wearing type if not then at least put a liner to take the wear( it would need to be made in 2 halves)

you don't miss much do you Ray?
The top rail is in two halves and is only pine but that could be changed for something tougher. Still may go along with the idea of using something to prevent the timber from wearing. Not sure about painting, I think kids do love the colours but will see how it turns out. I'm just experimenting as I go along with this one.Reality is no background music.

Coming along but still working out some procedures. Have fashioned 2 heads and toying around with which one to use. Originally I had planned to use the straight head but now not too sure about that. the first head is a bit skinny to my mind but I guess I could make 2 horses with different heads. Too hot to work again today so will put it on hold for a day. 2013-01-15 13.24.58 (Small).jpg2013-01-15 13.33.27 (Small).jpg
Nothing is glued up as yet but screwed so I can take it apart and make adjustments before I do the final assembly using glue and screws.
Personally I think I like the second head better but that may be just me. The second head has a bit of work to do so I may go with the first one on this build.Reality is no background music.

Any excuse John not to be in the shed......(I know doing the same here) to warm.
Horse is coming along well.
I prefer the 2nd head looks inline with the rest the first head still looks good but has old cave wall or Roman art type head.
Edited to add
John nice job on turning the posts and vac sucks up dust you know how these fellows hate seeing dirty sheds
