    Default Wheels, pre WIP

I am making my first batch of toys. Those more experienced than I, will already be aware that GRANDparenthood does that to woodworkers!
I have a (Carbitool?) wheel cutter that has lived in a dark cupboard for a few years and, once I tried using it, I discovered that it is prone to tear out and other forms of timber grain mutilation! While trialling different timber and RPM combinations, I had a brainwave and reached for a scrap piece of plywood. Not only does it minimise tear-out but, if you are careful, you can create both tread AND whitewall tyre effects!

Ill l'll post a 'proper' WIP when (if?) my first batch is finished.

Thanks Crowie, the jig is just a ply base fitted with a pin that fits in the centre of the wheel. A pencil mark on the wheel is then aligned with the 8 pencilled 'rays' on the base and a hole drilled less than half way through from both sides.
In an earlier method I cut square blanks for the wheels, drilled the centre hole for the axle and then drilled the 8 holes right through the blank. THEN I used the wheel cutter. This gave a neater set of holes BUT holding the square blank was a bit tricky during wheel cutting!

Found these plans in a Model Maker Magazine from 1954.
Thought the Bedford may suit your wheels.
