    Default Whilst not watching finish cure......

    It wasn't exactly the fastest of things to do, but it definitely killed an hour and a half. And I've been waiting to make one for a while now. I wasn't quite sure where to put this but it is more a puzzle than a toy. And although I'm mid-box making, you get to a point when your sitting waiting for the finish to cure. On to the next quick project.

    its my first one so go easy on the C&C, and no "that's rubbish, chop it up for kindling", just kidding.

    One Silver Ash and Jarrah Dovetail puzzle Cube.

    Its a bit sloppy, and even though I did such fine increments it was quite snug, but I think there was a bit that was out before I cut on the diagonal, after, it was a bit loose, but now I know what I'm doing I might make a few more. There is also a bit of tearout in places from the table saw, nothing a bit of sanding or resizing smaller won't fix. I have been advised to put a finish on which may tighten things up a bit.

    Did you cut the dovetails by hand
    They are a neat trick which I must try one day. Yours came out very tidy just like your boxes.

    Thanks TC, no I do very little by hand except finishing. My eyesight ain't what it used to be, also my dovetails would be unrecognisable. I used the router table and being Jarrah, I removed the bulk of the waste with a straight flute bit first then used the dove tail bit to take out the rest.

    there is another part to it and that's a magnet, a ball bearing and a drill hole. You drill corresponding holes in each piec but the top only is drilled had as deep as the bearing so the magnet holds it in place and locks the 2 halves together, then u tap it and the ball drops free into the longer hole and allows you to slide open.

    im glad I don't make any snigger fit as the rain has made it swell something chronic and is now as snug as a bug. No pics of bearing and holes yet.

    Its very cleverly designed. I'm sure the kids are going to have a blast taking it school to amaze all their mates. So best I buy a bag of 50 balls just in case. ( I can say that as that's the smallest amount I can buy, I just won't let the kids near them or else I will be playing 49 pickup)

    You got that one just right and made a great job of the dovetails they look nice and tidy and a good fit. I have seen these done before but as a box to keep things in

    Thanks Del, it was tedious work, and had to keep creeping up luckily the router table I use has an incremental adjuster so can move the fence thousandths of an inch. I wont be rushing back to make another one, although should I get married a second time I might make another one for the ring and if she's smart enough to open it, she's worthy of wearing it.

    Problem is I have to figure out what to do with the current one....... (wife that is). hahahahahaha. nah, just kidding, she's wonderful and.......
