    Default WIP Rocking horse Scarlet

Work in progress for Scarlet, the rocking horse, also the younger sister of Taylor.

She is being made from recycled maple (used to be a bed.)

My preferred method of construction is to use template patterns made from thin MDF. This enables me to make multiple parts quickly and accurately with minimal edge sanding.

To start I arrange the templates onto the timber to make best use of this precious and wonderful material (usually pine.) Anything left over goes towards making smaller toys until all that is left is sawdust.

To attach the templates to the work-piece I use double sided tape and run a pattern cutting bit mounted in a router table.

This is the method I used to make the rockers using a half template: if I was going to make more than one rocking horse I would use this method to make a full template.

Default Phase 2 of Scarlet Rocking Horse build

Phase 2 of the Scarlet Rocking horse build:

Think I should have clicked on *Reply to Thread* rather than post quick reply. Oh well...

All the parts cut out. Because the legs are splayed out, the top of the legs and the body has to be cut at an angle to match. They also have to be a handed pair – the photo shows one pair of legs with the red line indicating the high point. The same is done with the body part.

The second image shows the handed pair of leg and body parts.

In keeping with making a handed pair, the body plates are glued inplace.

Using my trusty Workmate, the head is clamped upside-down inplace, and screwed and glued to the body from the front. The screwswill be covered later.

The tail is fixed in a similar fashion, except that the pilotholes have to be drilled in at an angle. I am a great fan of pilotholes – it helps to prevent the wood from splitting.

The seat is next, but to cut the slots to fit the head and tail Ihave to make a very simple but effective jig. It ain’t pretty, butit does work.
I am using the seat template and a scrap piece the same thicknessas the head and tail (marked yellow) with two more scrap pieceseither side to act as a guide for the pattern cutting bit. The slotshave already been cut as close to the line as possible. All I have todo now is to use the pattern cutting bit to trim the slots to theexact size.

The seat is ready to fix in place.

That's enough for now - next is to attach the rockers.

Bit of a downer yesterday. this is what happened, you see. Rocking horse Scarlet and Taylor were inspired by a photo that I saw on the internet. At the time, having designed and made three different types of rocking horse, I had an idea for one more method of construction - all I needed was a shape to make it interesting.

This I found in a rocking horse from Forest Street Designs. It was only a photo, mind you, and I liked the shape and the colours. (sorry - Australian English Spelling) So I set about making something similar - perhaps too similar, because I received an email saying in effect that it is a registered design, even the colours, and that I should delete the page from my website. Which is what I have done, but it makes me a bit sad, really, for any number of reasons.

First of all, this is a design from the 1970's - over 40 years old. Whoever it was that emailed me must have been kept busy protecting his design over the years. More so lately with the advent of the internet, where things are so easily copied and shared.

Then I thought, well what if that happened to me - what if somebody had copied my design and was passing it off as his own. (Bear in mind that I was not selling the plans, in fact I was giving them away for free, as a PDF download, complete with instructions and photos, full size templates etc. Also bear in mind that I have never actually seen the plans, only a photo of the toy, so I have no idea of how it is constructed. My construction design is quite different.)

This incident has brought many questions to mind: Do I have to register my designs? How much does that cost? And is it effective or is it worth it considering that I am giving them away for free?

Does anyone have any experience in registering a design?
