WIP - Prototype Mechanism
The hand grabbing the coin mechanism seems to work nicely, but due to differing coin heights, it has been adjusted to take 20c coins only.
Coin.mp4
The drawer bottom is hinged so that it is open when the drawer is in place, allowing the coin to drop past it into a lower section. When opened to retrieve the coin, a dowel underneath shuts it, the expected coin isn't there, that is the trick of this toy. Coin can be retrieved through another opening on the bottom of the box.

That is the completion of the prototype. Next is to make the finished product which hopefully will meet with the little girl's approval.... This hope is not without risk given their fussy little natures !
Thanks for looking,
Gus

I really like this little project. One question though Gus, what breed of timber did you carve out the hand from?
Years ago on Channel Ten on Friday nights (early 70s) they had a character called Deadly Ernest hosting a Scary Movie. He found all the B grade movies from way back. The movies were so bad and "corny" he would put his own subtitles in to keep you more interested. Any way one night he had one of these secret coin boxes which added a "gool" feature to these "corny" moviesJust do it!
Kind regards Rod

Hello Rod,
I used Jelutong, not as good as Huon, but carves and sands very well. Slightly open grain, only noticeable if using a gloss finish.
I think I have seen that ghoulish hand box, maybe that stuck in the memory, hence this project.
Thanks for your interest,
Regards,
Gus

WIP - Video
A short video of the working moneybox,
Moneybox.mp4
The second trick, put a coin in the drawer and close it. That allows the drawer bottom to release, coin drops to the box floor, retrieved by tilting the box.

Thanks to all for watching,

Love the handle, great box.
Could you modify it so that coins go in and paper money comes out?
Then we would all want one.
