    Default Wooden Roller Ball Toy

After buggering up the first version of this toy with dye which bled through the shellac finish (see earlier post) I sanded down the balls and used water based paint suitable for toys. SEE EDIT NOTE UPDATE

The balls I used were 47mm chair legs ( no lathe in my workshop).

Grandson #5 is 8 months old and likes it a lot

    Regards

The outside pieces are shellac ... the balls were finished with

This is the same product except that my cans had "Water Based rather than Aqua based and had pictures of childrens' toys on the label. SEE EDIT NOTE .... DYMARK ADVISED ME TODAY THAT THEIR PAINT IS NOT SUITABLE FOR TOYS!!!!

There was also a White Knight spray that the uses includes "toys"but it is solvent bases so I went with the water based one

Looks very nice, colours are nice and vibrant.

I have never had any luck with White Knight paint, house paint took forever to dry, rattle can stuff seems to be slower drying and sets softer than VHT stuff I normally use. I haven't tried a water based spray can for years, I didn't get good results but I would like to see how newer stuff goes.

A great toy should give them hours of fun playing with that. I enjoy making things that can be played with as it gives me such pleasure seeing their faces when they get it, to me that is reward enough

To be fair it's probably no more harmful than a bunch of the plastic toys out there, who knows what the metal toys for kids are painted in?.
If the kids start chewing it it may be a bit more of a concern.

Don't want to hijack the thread, but I have a question on the paint finish.

I have just finished some building blocks for our Grandson, and prior to painting, should I undercoat them? The timber is pine.
