    Default G'day

Hi, well we are from UK but living in Jakarta, Indonesia at the moment. We have lived alot of our lives in Aus and are concidered by friends as "Honourary Aussies", my son , as he is born in Coff's Harbour always tells everybody he is Australian so I consider it ok to be on this forum.

I am a single parent and my son is very into woodwork. I love that, he has made a few wands so far but right now I have seen with interest some guidance on what projects to do with children.

Any advice gratefully accepted. Hope to make some mates and have fun, thanks for reading
    Greetings Gabloid

Hi, well we have made a birdhouse, we did it through a Bird society and they also did bat boxes. The thing is it was pre-cut so you just put in the nails...which was fine, actually it was great because we got a finished product and inspiration. Now I think we need to branch out alone.....looked up a web to make a small boat...ie piece of wood sawn to the right shape and then make a sail and a rudder. Think we will have a go at that. Thing is Im not sure on woods in Indonesia and we are pretty environmental and so want to do the right thing. Also don't speak the lingo yet and its not like going down B and Q here . Anyway will figure it, going to go and buy two clamps...yes? And one of those hand saws...with spare baldes as they aren't very strong are they? Don't think he should be with a big saw yet! In Aus we have found softer wood that is easier to work with, there are alot of hard woods here me thinks...hmmm have to get out there and suss it I reckon! Ideas still needed though, thanks for those so far Greetings

G'day and welcome - how about a pencil case? This could be simple or complex.

Brilliant, perfect, thats a great idea. That way we combine sawing withe grooves...for a sliding lid? Could do a hinge I suppose but sliding lid sounds good, measuring.Hummm, sliding lid...can you give me some help? How do I get him to cut the groove? We haven't any power tools, could we whittle it out do you think?

Loads of coconut here too, something for the future but going to concentrate on the grooove now...thankyou

    Thumbs up

G'day gabloid and welcome to the fun for both of you.

Used to live in Coffs Harbour and grew up just down the coast from there.

He could also build a serving tray. Nice and simple.

Really, do you know Emerald Beach? Thats our stamping ground, best place in the world I reckon!

Ok, the tray sounds good but I have the same problem as with the pencil box, how do I make a groove or hole without a power tool?

    Arrow

OK. Saw cuts and a narrow chisel. Difficult fro beginners and bumble thumbs like my good self, but doable.

For sering tray the bottom may be just glued and nailed/screwed tto the frame..

Emeral Beach? Yes, along with Boambee, opal Cove and so on.Beautiful part of the world.
