Red face G'day from Margate, Tasmania

    Hi everyone

This is a great forum with a great community. Very glad I joined.

I inherited all my Pa's old hand tools about a year ago but had no idea what to do with them so started looking for information on how to restore and sharpen them. I found a few videos on YouTube and, as is quite often the case on YouTube, it led me to go off on all sorts of YT 'tangents', as one does, until I came across hand tool wood working and a few of the well known teachers on there.

What more can I say...I'm hooked! What a lucky coincidence for me as it's opened up a whole new world and lifestyle for me. E.g. my TV died months ago, and I still haven't replaced it

I've made dovetail boxes, wooden trays and a few other small gifts for my family. I'm now learning how to make housing dados and mortise and tenon joints by making bookshelves for my sons. Next will be carcass construction and hopefully a tool cabinet.

Anyway, I'm a 'noob', but a very enthusiastic one, and love to learn the methods of traditional hand tool woodworking.

    All the best
    Adam

Welcome to the forum Adam. We really love seeing work in progress (WIP) pictures on this forum.

    Thanks for the welcome, Ross.
I do have photos of the projects I've made so far (including WIP ones). Geez...I even take photos of shavings I love woodworking so much (I'll spare you all from those!)
Where's the best spot to post them? In my profile gallery?
    Regards Adam

    Welcome Adam!

I'm in Margate too, so we can't be that far from each other!
@notevensquare recently signed up too, and he's just up the road in Kingston.

With respect to posting photos, just attach them to a post or reply.

Thanks everyone. I couldn't agree more, Keith.
It's nice to know there are some locals around too. I don't know too many other woodworkers.
Thanks again for the warm welcome and I'll get some photos up soon and.
    Regards Adam

    Welcome Adam

I am also in sunny Kingston. I am too clumsy for hand tools but I have a small shed with quite a few machines. PM me if you would like a look.

    Cheers
    Mike

    Thanks Mike

I think I'm a little clumsy also to be honest, but my golly I'm slow! I enjoy the process though.

I'd like to take a look, so will do, thank you.

I've just posted a huge 'my woodworking journey' thread on "WOODWORK GENERAL". Lots of photos. Still awaiting moderation I believe.

    Regards Adam

We might have to change the name to Tasmanian Woodwork ForumsIt's a nice feeling knowing there are like minded people in your area that you can at some stage meet up with and share your passion with, compare your progress and bounce ideas off. Even though I like to work on my own most of the time it's also good to interact with others of the same interests.
Are there any woodwork clubs in your area?
I see there is also another from Tassie who has joined recently as well - Wardan, but a bit further up the road.

Ah yes, Dallas! We're taking over ))
We do have some beautiful local timber species here. I'm a huge fan of sassafras and myrtle. I really like the 'texture' (for want of a better word) when I'm chiselling it. The shavings are very dry and crumbly with the stock I have. But 'cripsy' if that makes sense.

I'm much like you also. I do like to work on my own but I must catch up with Mike and check out his machines.

I've met a couple of locals here, mainly through buying timber. And all of them are always too happy to help and offer advice to a beginner. A great community indeed!

I haven't looked for clubs, but will do now that you mention it. There's a 'men's shed' up the road so I might pay a visit to that soon.

I'll check out Wardan's post and say hi.
