    Default G'day from Melbourne

    Hello Everyone

My name is Ruth, I’m a long time lurker, first time poster.

My interest in woodwork was borne out of necessity (having minor jobs in my house to do, and nobody to do them for me) Once I’d successfully completed a few tasks, I realised how enjoyable this could be. My first project was a coffee table, which turned out EXACTLY the way I wanted... So that was good! Over the years I’ve collected a fair range of tools, and completed several small pieces of furniture... all which turned out quite well.

I had a change in circumstances (long boring story) which has given me a lot more free time, so with the help of the internet, books and a very supportive man friend, I began to make some simple jewellery boxes. I have no woodwork training, nobody to refer to, so it’s been very trial and error. I got a lathe for my birthday last year, so that was Christmas presents sorted out (pens for all!)

I know at some point I’ll have to ‘fess up and show you some things I’ve made.... all I can ask is that you be gentle.... I’m not a pro.... but I am a Chef, so I bet I can cook you all under the table! LOL.

So I look forward to hearing from you. I have a newly acquired (perhaps impossible) new project and I really need your advice

and are keen to see your work in due course.

What part of "Melbourne" are you in? If in the Northern
suburbs we, the Northern Woodturners Club , are located
    in Kingsbury near Reservoir.

Happy to provide details if you are interested.

    Thanks Allan,

I'm from Seaford. I believe there is woodturners group at McClelland Gallery, I've been down a few times, but there was never anyone about.

Welcome Ruth. You are pretty much like most of us here in that you are self taught, and seek advice from others when required. It sounds like you are well on your way with this addiction.
Everyone is very passionate about their woodwork here, but there are also many other hobbies and interests covered on the forum as well.
A club that is not too far from you is the Peninsula Woodturners Guild at Langwarrin which may be the one you are referring to. Lots of contact information on their website.
Make yourself at home here, and be sure to show us your works as they come along. We all love to see what others are doing whether it be for admiration or inspiration.

    Welcome Ruth.

Seeing you now have a lathe, don't make pens but make small jewellery boxes on the lathe instead.

Whilst joining a club is great, a few lessons first with a professional turner is worth it's weight in gold and as you're close to I would thoroughly recommend him. You can sent to him a pm here.

Yes Peter, I've tried a few of them, but am limited by access to turning blanks of a decent size... Pens suit because the blanks are cheap and easy to obtain.

    Default Hi

    Hi Ruth,

    Another chef here

I'd be interested in seeing your coffee table! Amongst my other projects a coffee table is priority number one. I plan on making it out of pallet scrap, however I don't often see quality free pallets, most are the chep pallets that people don't throw away. I have a design for the table top but not for the frame. Iv'e got a few ideas off the net but I would be interested in seeing how yours was made and put together.

So looking forward to some pics!

I'm a newbie here too, welcome!

    Drew

    Hi Drew,

Since you asked so nicely, here is my first table.... the first thing I made, really....... It's not what you're looking for, as it's not got an actual top or base, but I thought It would look cool, so figured out how to make it, and it worked!

I made it so It would fit the height of my couches arm. It's made of Merbau and Pine and finished with Tung oil.

    Very nice Ruth....
May I encourage you to show it off in the "General Woodwork Section" of the forum so others can see & appreciate your beaut table.
    Cheers, crowie
