    Default Hello from Perth!

    Hi Guys (and maybe Gals!)

I'm into my hifi and music and am quite into building and restoring turntable plinths and speakers. I joined this forum looking a different perspective on things.

    Cheers

    Pete

    Hi Pete

That looks like an SME arm. I recognise a Thorens mat. I don't recognise the turntable, however.

I have a Thorens TD150 with Rega 3 arm and Supex cartridge. It has been tweaked a little but needs a new plinth. Ideas?

I also have a Rega 3, which I found on the side of the road - it was there for a verge collection! It just needed a new belt, and is running as new.

    Regards from Perth

    Hi Derek

Yes indeed its a SME3009 tonearm but the turntable is actually a Lenco L75 and started out like this:

I've pimped a few Thorens TD150 turntables, the one on the left also with a SME and the one on the right with a Rega tonearm:

Pete, I would never have guessed that was a L75! I had one 40 years ago and upgraded to the TD150. It was built like a tank, but I went belt drive for wheel/rumble drive. I had a Garrad 301 for a time as well. I was mad keen about HiFi in those days, and remained so for a further 10 years. My equipment has remained the same since: Musical Fidelity Synthesis amp and B&W DM7II speakers. All still going strong. There is a second system in another room - Cambridge Audio amp and Wharfdale Diamond speakers, and an old Maranz CD65.

It's nice to hear from another audiophile, although I cannot claim to be one anymore - the intellectual interest is there but the ears are not what they used to be. One of the turntables must go - I do not have space for both. Not sure which to keep as yet. My heart says the Thorens and my wife prefers the clean lines of the Rega. Perhaps a new plinth for the Thorens will impress her?

    What do you have?

    Regards from Perth

    Hi Derek

Haha yes the TD150 is a definite upgrade from the Lenco L75. The B&W DM7II speakers are a very interesting set of old school speakers. I like the sound of the early B&W's, particularly compared to the modern day versions. Lots of quality clean power is usually required to drive them in my experience.

I'd definitely keep the TD150 over the Rega. Plus with a new plinth and a better armboard the sound will improve significantly. I make the armboards out of HDF board and laminate both sides. Which tonearm is fitted to the TD150, and to the Rega turntables?

Don't worry about your hearing mate, its the love of the music that's important!!

My main deck is a sublime Technics SP10 MKII in a very heavy corian and marble plinth, and my speakers are DIY as I struggled to find a set of commercial speakers that I could live with.

    Cheers

Thanks for the advise Pete. Time to put the Rega 3 up for sale. Not sure what it is worth. The TD150 has the same Rega 3 arm. Ironically, it replaced the 3009 arm back in '87. The arm board was replaced at the same time.

I recall the Technics you have - a monster! Even more of a monster with the marble plinth!! Back in the day it rated alongside the Linn.

Feel free to contact me if you need help with woodworking. I am in Rossmoyne.
