    Default Hey hey from SA

G'day people. Where has this forum been my whole life!

I'm a fourth year furniture/cabinet maker. Got one month left! I work for a solid timber furniture company but when i finish i plan to keep sponge-ing knowledge by joining a kitchen company to learn different aspects of the trade. Love anything timber and am so keen to start being more creative with pieces i plan to make. Near future jobs: oak bed with vic ash bedsides, redgum dining table...

    Enjoying the forum already!
    Jason

Welcome Jason. As you have observed this is a wonderful forum for all standards of workers. Have fun, and be sure to come back often - we like pictures and works-in-progress.

G'day Jason and welcome to the shed.

I assume acousticjas made his own speaker boxes, or is he just noisy?

thanks for the welcomes guys! love a good forum where people are quick to welcome newcomers.

as for 'acousticjase'..its in reference to my love for acoustic guitars! ...would love to design and make one ....small body steel string....mmmmmm

ive had a heap of timber lying around and ive got to the point where ive got some decent tools to start making stuff at home....all i need now is a sliding panel saw and buzzer and thicknesser to make my life very cruisey in the the shed ...and some dust extraction! my goodness!

    the redgum:
ive had a heap of red gum slabs lying around from an outside table i dismantled...the maker of it didnt go about its construction terribly well and it wouldnt have been able to have a plate or cup placed upon it haha.oh wells, bought it for 80bucks...but i plan on getting it all machined 'PAR' and joint up a big ole slab for a dining table top....actually the dream is to laminate up 2 posts, also, and have them turned into some mighty fine turnings and make a double pedestal dining table and the top a 'capsule tablet' shape haha....so not oval....so that will be interesting to see how that will pan out....

    the oak:
scored 12 lengths of 133x68 @2.5m....too good! for free! they were once upon a time massive door frames! so gonna make a bed and then some bedsides to suit....bedsides will be bought and made new tho :P...

very very keen to get some ideas from on this forum and some help im sure!

thanks again, and hopefully i'll get some pictures coming soon of the bedsides im making at the moment for my friend...simple design but should be good

    cheers again!, Jason

oh also, ive got a laminated panel of who knows what (pretty maggot; the finish is terrible now, so dunno what it is,,, neeeds a sand)...it was an ex- harris scarf board room table and whoever made it should be ashamed! cos the base had pretty much no corner blocks of any kind and this thing is like 4500 long and 1400 wide!...(approx)....and get this...the 19mm main rails, from leg to leg, where actually TWO rails that went from a leg each and met each other in the middle (to make one long one) and joined, end grain to end grain, by one biscuit! my goodness!...no wonder it was binned :P...anyways, i forgot to say that my intentions with it is to rip it up into strips and make an lowline entertainment unit...

as you can see...im gonna be a busy one over the next few months trying to make space from our very 'timber populated' verandah...

    cheers again fellas

cheers again for a warm welcome men!

    an update on my doings...

been making some pine bedsides for a mate...at the drawers stage and ive made a silly mistake.

so i wasnt keen to hand make the dovetails! 6 drawers=too much time!..

so me thinks its time to buy a dovetail jig....Gasweld has a dovetail fixture for 80 bucks which i bought...came with bearing cutter...drooled over the 'leigh' ones at carba-tec the other day but i figured id go the cheapy for now til i find myself doing more units with drawers!....big mistake. Seriously...nothing straight forward about it. It should be, but alas it is not.....

now im new to the jig, but im pretty sure the cutter is not right....and the jig itself has alot of movement...the comb plate, once clamped to the material, still has flex to it.....i assumed the only thing to set up was the offset of the two pieces of timber....but it seems to be able to use the bearing on the comb plate the cutter is too far down and nearly cutting the whole way through the material! bit hard to explain but im going to take it back....cant be stuffed fussing around with it...its not worth the potential stress it'll cause...

im now thinking of purchasing a Leigh....the 12 inch is, quite frankly, the only size i can afford......what i want to know is can it be found cheaper than $339 in South Oz?...and does it HAVE to have this VRS that goes with it?...cos thats an extra $109....i assume you do...but if its just a matter of being extra careful without it i might not get the Vac & Router Support right away...

with that said tho, is there similar jigs to the Leigh...? or is it...Crap Jigs, Crap but bit better than last Jigs, then Leigh...? ive adopted the "only buy the best, so it lasts" mentality...so i was spuwen when i did go the El Cheapo...so i want something that will do the job forever.....

do i bite the bullet and go the leigh? DILEMMA!
