Hi all, another complete newbie

G'day folks,

I've recently started my woodworking journey, I _think_ I've finished the Gear Acquisition Syndrome phase, and am starting to learn the ins and outs of all the tools I've bought

Lots of fun so far! The only project I've taken photos of so far is my drill and grinder bench, images available at https://imgur.com/a/eeAhW.

I have a single car carport in suburban Canberra that's been covered with sheet metal that I'm using as a workshop, now have a dodgy bandsaw handmade in the 50s, a Tanner jointer of similar vintage, a ryobi thicknesser, table saw and mitre saw, and a bunch of hand tools of varying vintages

I mostly got started by wanting to build a proper handle for my grandfather's hatchet (Photos: https://imgur.com/a/9YfnI), and found that my hand tools took waaaay too long to cut through the spotted gum, but when I got the bandsaw, the rough shaping took less than 10 minutes! Finished off with the spokeshave and files and fits my hand perfectly.

Then I thought about all the other stuff I could build, and now have a rather long list of projects that necessitated power tool purchases and should keep me going for a good while, no doubt generating their own dependant projects on the way.

It's been very informative reading through these forums, so thanks all for making this place a great resource!

G'Day & Welcome to a top forum.
There are quite a few members in and around the ACT plus the rest of the country.....
You'll find a heap of helpful & knowledgeable blokes & ladies on the forum and for most very willing to assist.
Make sure you show off your handiwork as everyone loves a photo, especially WIP [Work In Progress] photos with build notes.

Welcome. Have you considered joining the ACT Woodcraft Guild? A great supportive group of men and women of all ages that is based in Kambah.

We have an Open Day next Sunday 5 November where we are open to the public to come and have a look at our massive new shed extensions and to see plenty of demos of the work we do. We have 10-12 Special Interest Groups that run on a regular fortnightly basis. Members have access to all the machinery and tools in addition to the knowledge of other members.

I did make it to the show on Sunday morning, lots of cool stuff to see, and buy, though I limited my purchases to some sash clamps! Some of the work on show I thought was incredible! Made my dovetails look like I've hacked it out with a butter knife or something!

I've thought of joining the woodcraft guild, but haven't got around to it as yet and unfortunately my other hobby (Amateur Radio) is getting in the way on the 5th but I'll keep an eye out for events over the next few months.
