    Default Introducing me'self

    Woodies
    Hi, I've just joined. I'm an occasional woodworker, but am squaring up for a big project namely turning 40-year old jarra roof timbers into floorboards (and other useful items if there's any leftovers). Any advice (besides 'don't do it!') would be much appreciated. I'm in Perth, south of river.

    Thanks, I saw the mail but I'll respond here to keep everyone in the loop.
    I don't have the required machinery.... my thinking was that I would rather spend money on tools than on paying someone else to do the job. I'd welcome any advice.

    Hi again Pete

    I emailed you with some reservations about milling this timber. The problem is that roofing timber is often full of nails, not to mention WA-sun-dried Jarrah is hard as the nails that may be in it. It is unlikely that a pro would take on this job for fear of damaging equipment. And if you wanted to do it yourself, you would need a 6" jointer, 12" thicknessser and a 14" bandsaw. That could cost you about $2000 new. If lucky, half the amount second hand.

    I'm around the corner from you, and happy to show you how - but not offering to use my machinery for the reason mentioned above. Just email me if you want to come around for a demo.

    Welcome and good luck with that old Jarrah. Let us know how it goes.
    Get rare earth magnets and also a metal detector from eBay. Go over every item with both of these to search for nails. Add in the cost of spare blades to your machinery budget. Stay safe.
