    Correct!

The reg's state that with a non load-sharing suspension, each axle must be able to carry 120% of its share of the load. So 2200Kg (total of both axles) divide by 1.2 = 1833.3333. Or... 1833 plus 20% = 2199.6

But I would have a trailer that I wouldn't soon grow out of and which would have ample carrying capacity.

I could even chain one (or more) axle up if running lightly loaded or unloaded.

I'm probably willing to bet that the Caravan will have had Composite. So using the same calculation (3300 / 1.2), you'd have 2750Kg capacity as a tri-axle. But as you said, turning tight corners is eye-opening .

Yonnee, thanks for the help. I'm still undecided on whether to go dual axle or triaxle. If I went triaxle, where would I position the Melbourne trailers independant suspension, front or rear of group? Or wouldn't it really make any difference?

Or possibly even centre of group? If I did that, then I wouldn't need to remove the current set-up, I'd just attach the new axles either side of the existing. Less work = more play time.

    Default Update

Well, ten months down the track and I've got my car trailer registered. I'll let the pictures tell the story. Tare weight 680kg, springs and axles rated at 2900kg, tyres and rims rated at 4200kg, breakaway system fitted.

Haven't looked at my running tally sheet for a while now, but I think it's cost me about $1200 all up. I did score a couple of near new light truck tyres for $30 the pair and the LEd lights for $30 on ebay off someone local amongst numerous other bargains. Plus the local workshop who sponsors me by doing all my (numerous) tyre changes on my play cars mounted and balanced all the tyres for the trailer too.

If I add my time for the build onto the job at my usual charge out rate then I probably would have been better off buying a trailer but it's been a pretty quiet year, workwise and I've been pretty underwhelmed by most commercially built trailers I've seen/owned. Poor paint and paint prep really lets them down in the tropics and they turn into rust piles in no time at all.

About six weeks to go till the first bitumen event of the year so the cheap suby I bought is off to the sponsor's workshop tommorrow to hopefully get the confused ECU (computer) sorted out. The next dirt event is probably not till April (end of wet season, fingers crossed) so that gives me plenty of time to get the suspension lifted (front struts came out this weekend) and the weber that I scored cleaned up and fitted. Happy Days!

That's a neat looking trailer and economically built too. Excellent job.
