What is the correct way to attach the drawbar if welding across it is a no-no?
Hello , I have read many contributions from Yonnee and his knowledgeable band and it seems there is a really good pool of knowledge and experience here.
I am starting down the road of a flat bed multipurpose heavy duty trailer build (detachable cage sides/front back and detachable box the same). Yes, I will be buying the all the bits from a reputable supplier and I am fitting electric brakes to all wheels.
I am concerned by the warnings about welding across the drawbar and I understand the reasoning behind it.
Hence the title of this thread and my question "What is the correct way to attach the drawbar if welding across it is a no-no?"
Your thoughts please, any sketches/diagrams/images will be appreciated.
Cheers,
MrSmith

Attaching drawbar
The highest bending stress on the drawbar is where the drawbar is attached to the front rail of the chassis.
To avoid welding across the sections at this point you can use a spacer plate, 5 or 6 mm thick, and weld along the members.
Tack weld the plate in position first, then weld the drawbar to the plate when the chassis is upside down, then turn chassis over and weld the plate to the front rail.
You will also need a similar plate at the front hanger area on the side rail to attach the drawbar.
Drawing shows a suggested detail.
