Camping / Box Trailer
Hey guys I have started to make a camper trailer/ box trailer.
My old man gave me the back off his Ford Ranger ute so that was a great starting point, didnt cost me anything and has lights already to go. So I had to make up a frame to bolt up to the ute back. I ended up using 50 x 50 x 3mm and cut all the steel at work (saves using the grinder at home and having nothing square)
This is the frame I ended up with
I drilled some holes for the bolts to pass through, and getting them in the right place was a complete pain... Nothing measured quite right. I ended up having to die grind the holes out and plateing them with some 3mm to get the holes the right size
Thats how it is sitting at the moment but I bought some more goodies today (ssshhhhh its still on the down low, I dont quite know how I'm going to explain this one)
Not a cheap kit but should be well worth it, I have read a few good things about them...
Also have to 100 x 50 x 3mm for the draw bar, what length draw bar would be roughly a good lenth?

The biggest issue with using ute tubs (particularly space cab, extra cab, dual cab), is that most of their load space is behind the axle location. I built one for a customer years ago, and we had to have a big steel tool box in front of the tub, as well as the spare wheel to stop it from tipping over backwards, even when empty.

I had a quick though about that, but then slipped mind. It's a tray off an extra cab so I might try and measure it up this arvo. But might just have to wait until its just about built too see what it is going too do?
And with my camper top I want to be able to remove it so I can still use it as a box trailer. Not real sure about how yet but I was thinking of making points to lift it off with a high lift jack. They are 200 of kg's apparently

I got the suspension mounts tacked in and one half welded. Jeez what a pain it is when the gas runs out
The frame is a little heavier than I thought it would be

I ended up with this after my weekends effort, fighting between the 3 month old and staying over night in Brissy and picking up a VW Manx
The shocks aren't mounted at the tops yet
I don't mind this kit at all really... Was decently expensive but hopefuly I should see the benefits

Looks like a very neat set-up.
Are the shallow circles of pipe for bump-stops? If so, you may need to swap the arms over.

Just looked again - think they might be for locating a jack to stop it slipping.

You sound a bit like me.
I used to own a VW Meyers Manx (wish I'd kept it now, they are worth a fortune now), and I built a trailer using a tub like that, and I made all my own independant suspension with coil springs.
Yes I am guessing that suspension setup wasn't cheap

I'm pretty sure they're around the right way, the spring mounts have to be that way up. I'm not sure what the circles are on the bottom of them. I doubt they're bump stops as they're right at the bottom.
The springs are rated to 1200kg's and you can get them in the same kit up to 2200kg's I think. And it's just a simple spring change
Wasn't cheap at all, a bit over 2k for the setup

I started trying to work out how I was going to make the draw bar today and came across this. On the suspension setup it has a toe in/ out adjuster and a camber adjuster. With the draw bar mounted right out to the outside chassis I won't be able to adjust the toe in/ out.
So I moved them further inward to see if that would work... It is a fair way in and now there is only 600ish mm between them as a posed to 1000ish mm
Looks like this
Will it still work? Or will it put a lot more stress on the draw bar? I have a decent off road hitch going on the draw bar and has very good articulation and movement in it

Vehicle components in Brisbane. They make a tandem kit as well. If you google independent suspension or cruise master suspension it should come up
