Default 17 Different Species Hall Table

For a bit of fun a Hall table with 17 different species.

    Makassar Ebony (breadboard ends).

    American spalted beech (top)

Jarrah, Red gum, Blackwood and QLD Beech (legs)

Black bean, African walnut, African rosewood, Burmese Rosewood (rails)

    Silky oak, Amoora (bottom rails)

    African quilted Cherry (bottom shelf)

    Eastern Mahogany (table buttons)

African Rosewood, Peruvian walnut, Celery top pine, Blackheart Sassafras, Ebony (drawer)

Pic 2 is the drawer showing the laminated off-cuts for the base, and Pic 3 is a close up of the Spalted Beech top.

Looks so much better in the flesh as my crappy camera doesn’t do it justice.
It will be making its way down to Ideal Tools as a visual aid for an up coming Hall table course.

Love it, I think it works really well and is more my style than most hall tables.

    G'day Lignum,

Have you made some dominoes with ebony on the drawers there?
I make things, I just take a long time.

    Thumbs up

Been times where I've been assembling things with dominoes part way knocked in and the effect looks real interesting, one day I'll incorporate it into something.

But, I'd never thought of dominoes of a contrasting timber in place of dovetails on a drawer. I'm going to file that one away and use. 'Beaut idea.

You've got me thinking now about drawers I'm about to do and was going to do 1/2 blind d/tails on the Incra LS.

The handle is also inserted into 8mm Domi mortices.

The Domi is an awsome tool

So with the dominoed drawer, you obviously need a front greater than the thickness of the sides? Looking at the shots there, is there any ratio, be it visual/strength or otherwise that you would recommend as a good practice based on 5mm tenons?

I find dovetails boring and predictable. Open every drawer and what do you see? A dovetail… yawn. They have their place, especially when hand cut they are magic. But I hate machine/jig dovetails with a passion.

The 5mm cutter because of its convex end only plunges around 20mm, so a side of 15mm is the maximum. The sides on this drawer are 14mm and the front is 20mm.

[edit] A 4mm cutter is now being offered by Festool. Now that will be fantastic for drawer sides.

Thanks very much for that. You've got me thinking, probably won't be able to sleep now.
