Smart man fixing up the vacant section of the wall unit and making it a home for valuables. I'm messy and disorganised but based on my mum and my ex, that will definitely help.
You don't announce the new T.V. Announce the new shelves and then mention the t.v. It's a surprise for her
I really like the shelves. Can I ask how you did them?

Hi mnb, thank you for the disclosure insight, I’ll tell you how I go?
Re the shelves....
61E150C4-E2A3-47FD-9323-151491D502B4.jpg
.... they are a simple domino’d frame, run through the sander to flatten, rebated on the router and a close fitting plywood insert. Most of the ‘drama’ lies in the colour and variability of colour of the frames. I discovered some years ago that the shelves themselves are only appreciated when unloaded ...... but that doesn’t often happen here?
The new TV arrived this evening...

.... and now I’m waiting for a passing 10 year old to set it up for me!a rock is an obsolete tool ......... until you don’t have a hammer!

Pffft and Bah! There's hardly any difference in size - she'll never know - it's in a new position - too easy. There are only two possible giveaways: the new one is very glossy (and I hear that yellow sandpaper can fix that) and it will take considerably longer to boot up every time it is turned on (that's new tech for you).
But I would definitely rip that Energy sticker off, for a number of reasons....

OK, I gave up on waiting for the passing 10 year old and thought to myself.... how hard can it be!

Woohoo, I’ve got it to work as a TV, to play my recorded TV shows and basically to do everything my old TV did? I know that it CAN do much more but.....
A rearrangement of the ‘technology compartment’ now requires another new shelf and then ... JOB DONE,

Congrats on getting the t.v. Working.
Re the drawers, thanks for that. I thought it might be a frame and panel but wasn't sure. Looks really good, glad I got to see them.

Sorry Mnb, did you mean shelves or drawers? The drawers are a simple melamine MDF box and a false front attached to the drawer (only) by the handles. The drawer fronts are also frame and panel construction with the panel being the same utile timber as the frame but given a light red wash before the clear finish.

Woops. Sorry, I did mean the shelves. I was in a hurry and put the wrong thing down.

Thanks for the drawer explanation though - I had another look at the pictures and they look really good too. The sides are the same?
You mentioned that it's modular but the vertical pieces at the sides on the front look like one piece. Are they not or are they removable or an outside frame ...? I'm planning on a few things for my house and thinking about how I will make them ...

This pic of the previously unlined TV compartment shows a light coloured frame built like a ladder...
A1DD500B-F8ED-4FAE-AE42-4F159D6379C9.jpg
.... and there is a ‘ladder’ inside each vertical partition. The drawer and cupboard modules span the width between each ‘ladder’ and are fixed to the ladder. The compartment sides, like the 2 I have just made for the TV compartment .......
2DCA97BF-89B3-4F0A-A0DF-85246F746BC2.jpg
.......are also screwed to the ladders and act as spacers between the drawer and cupboard modules. The outside end panels are also screwed to the ladders but from the inside. The front edge of each ‘ladder’ is capped with a piece of highly figured utile and it’s width is equal to the thickness of the ladder and 2 side panels. If one was feeling demented enough, it could be disassembled and reassembled with the compartments swapped around HOWEVER should I feel so demented, I will first post it on the forum in the hope that some of you might rush here and, if necessary, physically restrain me!a rock is an obsolete tool ......... until you don’t have a hammer!

The rearrangement of the technical stuff continues and ANOTHER shelf is required.
C2547C19-2E73-4196-BB5B-4B3CB5419812.jpg
In keeping with the theme, and the theme is that there is NO theme, this shelf is jarrah and bunya pine?
However, it looks good and if I can get another coat of WOP on tonight, I can finish this job first thing tomorrow although, if it is as hot as it was last night, I reckon I can finish the job tonight!

Beautiful. As you said it is the colour that gives a lot of the look. The proportions and the curves too though.
I saw your explanation of the ladder design last night but I'd had a few beers and couldn't take it in. I think I know what you mean now. Thank you. I agree it would be a big job to rearrange.
