20:20 hindsight and the wall unit
Some years ago, I designed and made this HUGE wall unit..

It is completely modular and can be disassembled into components small enough to fit into the boot of a small car. It takes a lot of its design elements from the beautiful antique Chinese chest that sits beside it. The picture on the left shows a detail of the wall unit and on the right is a detail of the chest itself.

So, the hindsight? Well, the lower left hand compartment houses the family TV. In this day and age it is a remarkably small unit being based on the ‘logic’ of 15 years ago that we could probably never justify the “thousands of dollars” for a big TV!
Well, LARGE TVs are now only hundreds of dollars ........ and my eyes ain’t what they used to be, so the time has come.
HOWEVER (and isn’t there always a ‘however’ ?) a larger TV won’t fit into the compartment but will have to go on a nearby wall and, because the old TV filled the compartment, it wasn’t internally finished and has no shelves! Suddenly I have to remember the details of the missing side panels and shelves. This morning I felt inspired (= Berocca?) and so I got to the shed early and got started. The original timber is ‘utile’ ...... and I don’t have any, but a plank of rosewood started to call me. The next few pics are progress through the day and where I ended up tonight.

The panels standing at the back of the hi-tech drying racks are the new sides of the compartment which are pre-drilled to support the shelves currently drying in front of them. A bit of planning and risk-taking has allowed me to dress, cut, sand, assemble AND apply 2 coats of WOP all in a day!

Rather surprised that your TV was not at eye level -when sitting of course. That is unless you sit o0n the floor!

Thank you NC’ but it might also have something to do with the new TV being delivered in the next few days and this new addition to the household having not been through the normal domestic financial approval process?
MrsF returns from OS soon and that should give enough time for the relocated PVCs (Potentially Valuable Collectables) to attract a fine layer of dust and look like they have always been there.
Do you think I will get away with it ?a rock is an obsolete tool ......... until you don’t have a hammer!

Thanks artme but as we ‘mature’ it amazes me how when we try to stand, armchairs seem to be lower and lower? The original TV was a bit low for the old armchairs but the new set of higher armchairs has definitely put it too low. The wall on which the new TV will surreptitiously appear, should allow for my slow but inevitable regression to a high chair ?
Speaking of regression, due mostly to the heat, my running season has only just started and I have pulled up lame on a couple of training runs. I have been to my long-suffering doctor and asked him how I should strap my knees to get me through to the City-to-Surf and his reply was......... TOGETHER !a rock is an obsolete tool ......... until you don’t have a hammer!

My Grandson, having been told that GaGa has cleaned up NaiNai’s carport AND bought a new TV, announced that “GaGa is dead meat”!
So, in for a penny, in for a pound, the wall unit mods and TV relocation proceeded at pace.
The TV compartment had been left unlined...

....but, with a bit of adjustment, the new side panels finished the compartments...

.... and the shelves converted it into a useful space..

.... unloaded the PVCs from the top of the Chinese chest and made room for the (current) TV.

Im pretty happy with the project so far and, very importantly, I am ready for the new TV.

That TV is barely bigger than a computer monitor... I hope your new TV is substantially bigger. You could say it's required because of declining eyesight (yours, or your wife's if you're that brave).
Great work on the modification of the cabinet.
cheers,
ajw.

I envy the time you have to do woodwork. (Alas I know you have worked hard to get where you are now and have a few more years on me)
Beautiful work.

Thanks mate. Actually, I was just sitting here watching some recorded TV and marvelling at how much bigger it looks out of the wall unit? The current one is 34” and the new one 49”. I’ll start with it standing on the chest before either flat or articulated mounting it to the wall. I was also lustfully looking at TV ‘lifts’ where the TV would be retracted into a vertical box behind the chest and raised for viewing. That would have the HUGE benefit of delaying the the announcement of a new TV?

Well... If you are dead meat anyway... May as well get rid of all the shiny porcelain junk taking up valuable space where antique woodworking tools could be stored....
Very nice work you did there by the way - especially on such a time constraint...
And I suppose if the new living arrangements for the trinkets aren't adequate - you could always move the new TV, comfey reclining armchair, and fridge out to the Shed to make room... Go dig up the 20" TV from 1996 and return it to it's rightful place in the living room there.
