    Default 4 Poster bed

    Hello all,
Im making a simple 4 post and rail queen size bed out of some old oregon I got from a demolition yard.

The posts are about 95 by 95mm and the rails are about 200 x 30mm.

I am wondering about the best method for joining the rails to the posts, and was thinking of either doing a blind stub where the full rail inserts into a mortise hole cut out the size of the rail, or whether I should do a mortise and tenon, but then I was worried about the strength of the tenon given the width of the boards?

Any advice on the best type of join to use here? I would prefer not to use any metal hardware if I can, but maybe that is the strongest option after all?

    Thanks.
    Rob.

I'd use split tenons and, preferably a cutout between tenons, like in a Shaker pencil post bed. That said, 200mm isn't all that much, you could probably get away with anything.

If you choose not to use any metal hardware, you could use pegs or wedges in the tenon. Which would still allow you to easily dismantle the bed.

Hardwood loose tennon glued into rail, dry fitted into mortise in post. Peg or screw from inside edge of post through tennon and on into post. If rail is wide enough use two fixings per post.
