    Default Anothe Hall Table -WIP

I have to make a hall table for my other DIL and I thought that maybe she might like a variation on my previous one ,but she wants one like this table

which is from FWW . Her table has to be from Tas Myrtle though and the second request was for the drawers to be tight under the top rail .

Now I think this would look -- well -- yuck
I think the spacing between the drawer and the top rail should be - say 1/3rd of the table height. Roughly according to the golden rule .
I would appreciate comments about this point before I go wasting timber

Another point to think about is the stretcher- as the legs are quite slim this should be not too high either.
I've just become an optimist . Iv'e made a 25 year plan -oopps I've had a few birthdays - better make that a 20 year plan

Have to agree with you peter. Don't put the drawers up under the top rail!

I would move the drawers up to immediately under the top. OK, that may be conventional thinking, but those low drawers would be magnets to crawling and toddling youngsters. Even an empty drawer could hurt a toddler if pulled out.

I would also ask yourself: "How good is the daughter's back and will she hate me for putting the car keys drawer so low down when she's old and possibly suffering from osteoporosis?"

It's so 1990s and already dated. I'm sure you can do a lot better than that Peter.

To my eye the whole drawer assembly looks wrong. If I visualize the table without the drawer unit I see an elegant design, nicely proportioned, with the smooth curves of the legs.

The drawer unit looks boxy and incompatible with the table.

As for the drawer height, I agree with Woodwould and the DIL.
The time we enjoy wasting is not wasted time.

Thanks for the comments guys. Looks like I'm back to the drawing board.
I think that what this DIL was telling me was that she did'nt want something similar to the table made for her SIL.
I don't want to have a table with a glass top as the top will cost approx $250 and I already have the Tas myrtle.
I am now thinking that something similar to the one below

    would be better.

That's what I thought too Nick . The one at the front was described as a sofa table on the site where I got the pics from. I'm going to change things a little bit though .I have run all this past the DIL to tell her that what she will be getting will be a surprise but she will luv it .
If she does'nt I will cope with that later

I'm still thinking about that one . If I do it will just be smallish in the center of the top -probably a square set at 45 deg

DIL will feel very second rate.

I agree, and maybe tapered from top to bottom as per the table in post #1. Much better look.
