Ok, let me throw yet another spanner in the works...
Or should I call it a wrench, given the context which follows here?
'Round these parts we call what youse're talking about a "buffet", I reckon.
With that said, I think it's all pretty regional (obviously). I, personally, think of a buffet as a long (6-7ft) cabinet on legs with drawers in the middle, doors on the sides. Basically something for food service which is near counter height and in which you can store your service supplies. But if you look on the interwebs you'll see everything shape and form of cabinet called a buffet. The only common thread seems to be the fact that it has both doors and drawers.
But then a sideboard is just the same thing only shorter...?
And then there's a Credenza... Where does that fall?
Are we tumbling down the rabbit hole (rebate hole?) at this point?

I was gong to throw in some Nth. American terms just for fun, but I'm getting a bit hazy and I would probably have mixed things up, so thanks for your 'clarification'!
The drift of names over time & cultures is hard enough to follow, but throw in the different terms for furniture periods or fashions, and it really starts to do your head in - "Regency", "Federal" and "Empire" can all denote the same style (with regional differences, of course) depending which country you're talking about. Shera-white & Hepple-ton as I call them are Tweedle Dum & Dee to my unschooled eyes. I used to get thoroughly confused reading about furniture until I learnt to check the front page to see where the author came from! I'm only a little less confused after years of trying to educate myself, & always happy to acquiesce to those with more experience, a better eye, and a better memory than I have.....
