Another Bed...
Didn't bother doing a work in progress on this one as there seems to be plenty of queen size beds being constructed at the moment.
Anyhow, this one is finished, with the exception of tying the slats together but that can happen when I get some spare time.
It's mainly recycled Sydney house frame of unknown species with a couple of poorly bookmatched New Guinea Rosewood panels. I finished it with 2 coats of FW Fine Buffing Oil that I picked up super cheap when my local Mitre 10 was consolidating two stores into one.
The NGR panels were just a bit too small to cover the entire width of the head and foot so I had to add a secondary post.
I haven't started the bedside tables just yet, the ones in the photo are left overs from the previous bed that provided sterling service since I made it in my final year at school over 20 years ago. This one is a first anniversary present to the wife, though I was about a week late with the delivery...

That looks great. I like the clean, simple design. Nice without being complicated.
Surely your wife can forgive the delay for a present like that!

Bravo sir, looks the goods!
I really like the slab look within the simple bed, not over the top.

Lovely work Sort of a picture frame look with slabs reminds me of the way Art Galleries hang really old aboriginal bark paintings to conserve them. Recyled hardwood must have been hard on tools.

I like it that's well thought out and the added design to ensure that the base and head match.

Thanks for the comments Gents.
The recycled hardwood isn't too bad on the tools. I use a cheap ozito electric planer to remove all the crud after I've denailed just in case I've missed anything. Once that's done I'm happy to send them through the machines and some fresh jointer/thicknesser blades made light work of it. The only hand tool use for this project was some time flattening the panels after glue up and removing machine marks from everything prior to assembly with a jack plane. A little bit of scraping towards the end finished it off...
The wife approves, though she's disappointed that I've separated the bed and bedside tables into two different projects, which means I can sneak my next personal project in before they're done.

Looks great . I like the "complimentary " head and foot panels", one convex and the oher concave . You were lucky to come across them .
I've just become an optimist . Iv'e made a 25 year plan -oopps I've had a few birthdays - better make that a 20 year plan

I got the New Guinea Rosewood from a forum member whom was having a bit of a shed clearout a couple of years ago.
These panels were my first attempt at resawing and bookmatching so I ended up losing a lot of the thickness with my poor technique and the bookmatching was not so well matched because of this. Still came up ok though.

Wow
This bed is so beautiful.
I am starting my first bed project today, bit 'scared' about using good wood so going to make a single slat bed out of building lumber. Thinking along the lines of a day bed type of arrangement. You have given me so much inspriation.
Thanks
Sharon
