Default It's beginning to look like a nightstand!

The project ended last time with all the parts cut and shaped for the two bases ..

Square peg into a round hole? Not quite, but the square ends of the aprons must join flush with the round legs ...

The choice was either to cope the end face of the apron to match each leg, or to shape the leg to match the end of the apron. I decided on the latter as each leg had a taper and the ends of the aprons were angled at 3 degrees. Matching the legs seemed much simpler. Still, it would prove to be a fair amount of work.

Step 1 - mark out the recess:

Step 2 - chop out the waste with a chisel:

    The fit is decent ...

Eight joints later, and the first stage of the first base is at glue-up stage ...

Tapers round legs splayed at 3 degrees ...

The rounded front can be seen here ...

    Close up off joints ...

I couldn't resist a little mock-up (but lots still to do - not only that this is one of two) ...

    Regards from Perth

    Derek,

Looking fantastic, but how will the top attach too the base, or do I just have to wait for the next exciting chapter [emoji849].

    Cheers Matt.

We could actually Derek, an if we throw in some remarks about sharpening stones or low angle bevels, it might put a bit of “Heat” into the forum, but I will behave myself an wait patiently[emoji849].

    Hi Derek,

    That's looking great.

For the recess for the tenons, did you just level the bottom by eye?

Also, as a beginner trying to understand order of operation, any reason why the recess made after the leg was turned, rather when the stock was square?

    Best regards,

    Adam

The truth is, Matt, I did have a method, but now I have thought of a second one, and need to decide between them.

Adam, the choice was whether to make the mortice+recess together, then turn, or make the mortice, turn and cut the recess later (as I did here). I think that there are pros and cons for each. There is something to be said for doing it first, then turning. My concern was that I felt it better to join the pieces later, where I could mark each individually and fit each individually. More tedious but possibly more accurate.

The recess bottoms were levelled by eye. A dry fit revealed any hills.

Looks great Derek. The colour contrast really sets it off and adds to appeal of the piece. The mating of the leg and aprons is very neat and matches to the aesthetic. I also appreciate the step by step description and great photos (I struggle to get any decent shots in my workshop) to help me think about how I would tackle the same issue/challenge and what the order of operations would be.
