    Default Bench Testing

Its been many years since making anything large, lack of space, renting, lack of enthusiasm or purpose or need for ourselves.
A request for an out door setting by LOML as the blow mould fold up table wasn't going to cut it.

Some low priced Merbau decking from the Blue & Green sheds a rough plan dimensions and . A few interruptions such as Myford lay shaft ceasing, I needed it to make a couple of parts to make the router table to do the mortice on the legs for the bench.

So Myford fixed, router table top made (cabinet or frame made latter down the track)

The legs are laminated 45x19mm @90^ mortice and tenon joint as well as screwed.

All screwed together from underside 10#Stainless steel self tappers, counter bored.

Bench is 1900L x 370W x 450H I fitted a stretcher after these photos were taken a third centre leg possibly will be made also. I'm close to 100kg possibly more and the slight sag when I got on alone it needs due to length that bit more support

Its so nice to have room to do something big again. Table has begun legs and main frame cut 2m x 900W x 750 a dry assembly and stored till I complete the bench.

Progress on the table is good some work yet to do around the internal edges where the tiles will drop in. 1st coat of oil was put on 2 weeks ago.

Used the router tale top inverted to route to a depth of 10mm in three stages.

EXCELLENT x 10, like the tile inserts. I have just the place for that but somehow I dont think your LOYL would part with it.

    Default Small Bench

I made a second smaller bench two seater, one which can be easily moved about as required.

approx 1m long othewise same as the larger one.

After applying last coast of oil I started up the lathe and began turning a couple of hammer handles. It hasn't been used for such since it had its overhaul.

Looking very good, and glad that you have been able to cross something of Sue's 'hunny do' list.

I noticed that you had half lapped the intermediate seat supports into the rails in the first post and was concerned that they had been done 'upside down'.

In use the rail will be in compression at the top and tension at the bottom, this suggests that the notch for the half lap should be in the top of the rail, so that when the intermediate support is installed, it carries the compressive forces along the top of the rail and transfers them across the notch, while the lower edge is intact and able to carry the tension through the span. As built, the half laps are creating stress concentration points along the bottom edge and will allow the rail to flex at much lighter loads.

In the pic of the short bench, it is obvious that you have noted and resolved that issue. An alternative within your means would have been to connect the intermediate supports to the rails using M&T, as you did with the lower rails in the ends.

Is the thinking behind the tile inserts to put food on, so they are easier to clean? Looks awesome by the way.

    Thanks.

The tiles so hot pans or plates can sit and not mark the table, not put food on directly....but it could happen.
