Thread: Blackwood Table for my Son

Nice. Powdercoating is cheap. It won't cost much to get a simple frame done.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

Very nice top FF!!
I really like large areas of blackwood. One of my favourite timbers.
I hope you didn't, and won't run into movement problems. I made a
unit about twenty years ago from Sally wattle - almost the same as
b/wood and it wlaked all over the place until I had everything assembled.

Looking very good Brett
I cleaned up and tuned the bandsaw, the tires were cracked but a coat of spray contact solved any problem of them coming off plus I wrapped some Protectadeck around them until I get new ones, works a treat. The table was out of parallel to the blade by quite a bit , drilled over size holes for mounting bolts and tuned table to the blade, spot on now.The person who never made a mistake never made anything
Cheers

I'm pretty sure he said it was a giveaway at one of the shows (last year's?) if he bought something else. He seemed to remember a retail price of a lousy 25 bucks, but the cheapest I could find online was $150 at Gasweld:

It's a cracking piece of kit! At $25 I'd have purchased two the next day, but at $150 I'm inclined to make something.

The UK price is better but then exchange rate & freight is the killer...

I guess a tradie who hangs a lot of doors would see value at that price but I would be finding something a bit less expensive. I can do the same thing with a $20 bunnies folding workbench.

ooops, I haven’t been following posts for a couple of days! I really can’t remember how much it was as, luckily for me, a domestic truce * is declared these days on spending at the wood show ? It was on the Bahco stand (or the stand that sells Bahco gear) and it was a sale price IF you had already purchased $X of gear.
When I look at it again, I doubt I would have paid more than $100 for it but I would have been attracted by it at say $70 because I had some doors to renovate at my daughter’s. It’s a clever little device as it is also foot operated which is handy when juggling doors on my own.

Can't go wrong with Blackwood can you! I've purchased a bottle of the Livos countertop oil, keen to give it a go. I'm enjoying this thread. Look forward to seeing the final piece.
Sounds like you've already landed on a leg / base design but I thought i'd chime in with another. These were some PNG rosewood tables I did for a friend. Initially the tables were going to be completely timber but due to the high armrests on the chairs, my rails/styles would have been too thin. Some 50mm square tube and 90x90 right angle for the corners worked a treat. Powder coated to the same flat white as their chairs.

My jury is still under consideration on the Countertop Oil. I put another coat on this morning, when it was perhaps 23° in fletty's shed. Rubbed it in only by hand for about 4 minutes I suppose and then to give it the final wipe stroke it was already difficult to run a cloth down the grain. I think it might need cutting by perhaps 30% followed by an extra coat or two. Certainly it needs cutting if you want to hard burnish it.
In other news today, we went to the steel fabricator in Narellan who had previously said "Givvus a week" when what he really meant was go and have a coffee and we'll have it welded up for you.
So we had said coffee, preceded by located Trev The Powder Coating Guy around the corner (actually 3-4 corners away) and we were able to drop the job off to him - who really does want a week to Matte Charcoal PC it.
Closing in on a completed result now.....
All in all a pretty satisfying day: Steel & PC sorted, fletty's Barbie Doll's House delivered, Chop Stix kit purchased, new remote locking device picked up, coupla beers and a burger under the Camden Gum Trees, replacement flexy for my DC picked up, 10 free TC cutters for the thicky.....all is pretty good in the world!

Good thread Brett! I'm logging in a bit late to this one, been preoccupied with other matters & not paying proper attention. I would've had some smart-*s* questions on what's caused this epiphany? Not a damn fence-paling in sight, just lovely bits of nice wood, seamlessly glued, & polished like the proverbial! Good heavens, I better check if the planet's still on its axis......
The job seems to be going well (& quickly!), nothing like having an off-sider when there's heavy lifting & turning involved. I hope the finish is spill-proof, it would be a shame to mark up all that painstaking preparation. I'd be running some tests on the test-pieces with a few of the usual suspects like water & (very cheap) wine - save the drinkable stuff for a libation or two on delivery.....

Cheers Ian.
Weeeell it nearly had grey fence posts for legs but they didn't get approval. I have a goodly supply of them down the bottom shed.
Yeah I'll test that oil finish on an offcut. If it doesn't keep out the nasties then I might have to give it a hit of WOP. Unfortunately Minwax WOP can no longer be purchased as it was Woollies bringing it in for Masters (and Home Hardware - my local). Apparently Feast Watson WOP "isn't as good".
Tony (NCA) suggested I make my own WOP. His recipe is 40% PolyU, 30% each of BLO and Turps, so I bought a coupla small cans of Satin and Gloss to fool around with.
fletty and I did fool around with hard burnishing some Aussie Oil into a BW offcut and then a few coats of Minwax WOP. A little too much gloss but it seems to be a pretty tough surface - this table will be exposed to chilluns in a while (just waiting for the first one to drop any second now) so a tough surface would be a good idea.
