Cheers Peter. Yes, there is a corresponding hole for the tapered top of the pedestal.in the top of the 'cage. Better get the legs in motion

Default A Brace of Walnut Tilt-top Tables continued....

Those with excellent memories will remember the thread of the same name in which my son and I started two walnut tilt-top tables. The project ended up on hold due to a variety of reasons - life in fact. A new grandchild and the usual family illnesses etc, etc. Now the first of the tables has been completed and I've taken delivery for the final finishing. The second will follow soon.
The body and legs are English walnut and the top of the first table is American black walnut.

To start at the beginning here is some wood.column1.jpgcolumn2.jpg

Here are two poor photos of the first delivered table ready for finishing. Photography is not my speciality subject.

And the spider under the legsIMG_6614.jpg
Doubtless Blue-Devilled will put in better photographs.
    Cheers,
    Jim

Now all we have to do is coax Woodwould back to keep you on the straight and narrow.

The legs are Black Walnut too on that one. I only sneeze for the 'States variety, so have evidence

I stand corrected. Who can argue with such sensitive sinuses?

Haven't got much time at the moment as the grandson is staying over the school holidays. However, I did find a piece of scrap walnut (English), finished it with the help of a little filler as the grain is a bit contrary and did a quick bodying up with garnet shellac. This is important as I have to see if my wife can live with the colour/finish. The actual piece will be somewhat darker as it is better quality wood than this test piece - also I didn't make a new rubber, just added the garnet shellac to one that had been used with button polish.

ps the camera flash has created areas of deeper colour where the grain changes. Actually the colour is even.
    Cheers,
    Jim

With the history of this project I'd better try to keep up to date. So far I've dismantled the table prior to polishing and cleaned the bench - four pencils and two marking gauges had found asylum there!
The real work has been done on the underside of top; as it is a tilt-top this will be on view occasionally. I've filled one or two flaws (mainly tear-out where the grain was cranky) and sanded prior to polishing. I like to give the wood a feed of raw linseed first - small amount only - and then I'll leave it for a day or so before approaching it with a rubber. The beauty of linseed is that you get a good idea of the final finish.

Amazing what can be done when the grandchildren have finished their visit

More importantly, best not let the libs hear about your workbench, it'll be excised from the mainland if you don't watch out

I think I have to agree now. I was driving along yesterday afternoon and my wife asked what was the wood I'd been working with earlier as I was very red in the face. Not being prone to embarrassment I have to put it down to the black walnut.
ps I've just remember that I'd chainsawed a branch off the apricot tree which is usually my bete rouge.
    Cheers,
    Jim

Now reaching the stage where the end is in sight. The only problem has been the usual one of finding pure cotton for the rubber. I've cut up a perfectly good pillow case but from the way it behaved (glazing over) there must be some polyester in the cotton. After that it was back to the old standby of raiding the handkerchief drawer. I keep telling myself that one day I'll go into a fabric shop to get some pure cotton lawn.

    It's downhill from now on.

What? I was just having a nap.

The next time the bridge goes down, I know who to ask to make a few braces for it.

I thought these tables were finished a couple of years ago. They're coming along nicely though.

I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.
