When gluing up a breadboard end, the fit along the length (or is that width?) needs to be tight otherwise the breadboard end will wobble. You don't want that! I draw bore the centre dowel, and add a little glue in the centre quarter of its length. The remainder of the breadboard is free to move - no glue - and whatever dowels/pegs are used to keep in in place must have slotted holes to permit movement.
The thinnest breadboard ends I have made are in the lid of this lap desk. The lid is only 3/8" thick, which means the tenon and the mortice are 1/8". No pegs ...
That is now 5 years old, and has not moved at all.

Those annoying poofteenth differences always seem to work their unwelcome way into my projects. What is really annoying is that as the creator I'm conscious of those poofteenth differences and somehow my eye is always drawn to gaze with regret at those poofteenth flaws.
