I don't have a biscuit joiner. What if I use rabbets and dados instead? Or are rabbets on the outside corners going to look naff?

Here's a design for you
1220 wide at the top, with overlay doors.
The verticals are located and attached with screws -- use a jig to temporarily hold things in place till you drive the screws.
designed to use 18 mm MDF, but I think 16 mm veneered particle board (with solid wood edging on the exposed edges) would be a better choice.
(if from MDF I suggest you edge the front and sides of the top with 6 mm thick solid wood.
If you adopt a plinth base you can dispense with the lower construction rails.
