    Default Bunk over existing queen

In 2005 a boilermaker friend welded up a QS frame with bush pole/farm gate bed heads. It's a beautiful piece of work, but I can't put pics of that as the headframes are stored in my "shed" (ie hauled up 4m into the air and chained to the roof).

    Our
two oldest (7,4) sleep on the frame from that, that I minimally mounted on blocks. Now the youngest (2) is getting ready to move in (with them), we decided on a bunk over queen bed. We already have the mattresses and bedding for both, and the jarrah timber from the old front pergola where the deck now is seems a good option - 31 year old timber with shade cloth nailed to it.

I kept the good bits - three straight 4x2's, the two 4x4's and the 8x2 piece pictured sawn in two (it was warped). Cleaned up...

So the idea looks like this

And that's where I'm up to. I have tomorrow to work on it while the oldest are at school with just the 2yo and his expertise. ...and I'm counting on it! FWIW The butterflies on the joinery diagram are the 4yo participating...

    Good luck with the build

    don't forget to

    1. include rails so the kid in the upper bunk can't roll out.

    2. space any rails or verticals close enough that a kid can't get their head or another body part stuck between the rails.

Why? They'll only do it once. Dont mamby pamby them, build up tough kids

You may toughen them up but you might kill them in the process

    Hi all
Thanks Ian all good those are exactly the details I would pay attention to. So I've made sure they can easily fall out and get their arms stuck - should teach them to lie still in bed haha!

However, the stair I think deserves attention. As I've made the supports opposite the wall angled (being bunk over queen) the frame is/will be somewhat behind the matress, so no direct clearance for a wooden stair stringer opposite.

I am thinking of a mono-wooden stringer from the support, and some solid metal supports (handrail style) bolted to the mono-stringer for the far side of each tread. The treads might be about 100mm.

To gain the stair (the top of the matress will stand 65cm off the floor), I could bolt a tread to the underside of the bottom bedframe.

It's easy for a bigger kid (he's 7, 8 in dec) but I have to allow for the smallest (only just 2 but unstoppable). I don't want him pitching off a (much simpler) vertical ladder from that height without a safe fall (he climbs ladders like that at playgrounds, but its a sand fall...).

I do believe in the toughen up, but yeah prob stop short of maiming

I'm reluctant to mention this, but those slats look far enough apart that a kid's head could get stuck -- with consequent very unpleasant results.

The AS/NZ Standard is 4220 " Bunk bed and other elevated beds". Should be available in your library.

So I managed to build it into the room in modules after several test assembly's in the garage. I struggled with the four-way angled joint but a couple of custom twisted angle brackets made up for my lack of expertise...
Here it is without any finish except the top rail
