    Default Calling All Wheel Wrights

Just wondering if any Forum Members do Wheel Wright work, or know of someone on the East Coast of Australia (ideally SEQ) who does that sort of work. My Brother in-law and Sister are horse people, and have been making horse drawn wagons/buggies/sulkies etc for some time. The Brother in-law is an accomplished woodworker and has built horse drawn vehicles, but has had to use modern wheels, as it seems that making wooden carriage wheels requires some pretty specialised tools.

So, if you're a Wheel Wright who wants some work, or you know someone who can do that sort of work, please reply to this post, or send me a PM.

    Thanks,

A long way from you but Sovereign Hill museum in Ballarat has a wheelwright. Might be worth a call or email to them as they might know of others nearer to you.

I should have done a thorough search on this forum before I posted this question - there are lots of links to Wheelwright techniques and general information on this forum - just had to fiddle with the search parameters a bit.

The Soverign Hill suggestion is a bit far away, but then I am planning a trip down to Victoria later in the year, so I may schedule in a visit to Ballarat while I'm down there. I've sent an email off to them anyway - be interesting to see what comes back.

I'm still looking for a Wheel Wright who's a bit closer to SEQ if possible.

Take a trip to Toowoomba's Cobb & Co Museum they have a set up there much closer for you.

There's a thread on this topic from a couple of years ago:

    https://www.woodworkforums.com/f11/wooden-wagon-wheels-155180

In it I linked to a You Tube from Ireland with video of the whole wheel making process and you can see the specialised set up required:

    Default How it's made

Episode 29, Series 23 of the television show "How it's made" has a good segment on the making of wooden wheels. Don't think it's been shown on commercial tv but it's available on the internet. Hope you enjoy it.
