Child's bed project: Upholstored with timber framing and built in 12v lighting
It's been a while since I contributed a project to this forum, but thought I would to show some pictures of a bed I am making for my daughter who is still preschool age. I looked at a few beds online and thought I could incorporate a few features that looked nice into one single size bed... The frame is NZ beech. The head board and foot board is doweled together and has been molded on a spindle moulder with copy collar as well as some routering to finish as the knives I had didn't complete the whole job.
To keep some of the natural pink/purple colour of the beech timber (which should compliment the velvet fabric I planned to use) I used a white wash finish and water based polyeurathane which I sprayed on and came up better than I expected, it did turn a bit yellow where it settled more thickly but no runs ;-). I was still quite impressed with how well it sprayed and dried quickly leaving a nice finish.
When it came to the upholstoring I used a punch to make the holes to thread the bolt on led light fittings where upholstory buttons would normally go. I mistakenly used a too large diamond pattern for the fabric and had to reorder fabric (I trusted a diy website that said to use double the foam thickness as the increase on size of the drilled diamond pattern in the plywood however it turned out to be about twice the factor required...
The leds operate on 12v but run too bright so I installed an adjustable DC - DC convertors on both of the circuits going to the upholstored boards. This also reduced the power consumption of the circuits by a factor of about 4 but the light level only appears to dim about half. This also makes them safer as they won't waste much energy as heat which may have been hazardous. Most of the lights are pink/purple and operate on an RF remote control dancing in various modes, but the head board has 5 white leds closest to the outside edge as reading lights that are operated by a touch switch/dimmer that I will install on one of the bed rails so it's easy to reach and since the switch is backlit at all times it wont shine onto the bed from there either. Finally a PIR sensor operated strip light is installed within the mattress support.
Just a few more hour's work and it should be ready to ship out of the workshop... I'll try to attach pictures soon as can't seem to add them to this post.

Can't help with the pics, but to restore paragraphs, force a blank line (or two) between paragraphs. It has negligible impact on file size, and makes for easier viewing.
