Default Coachwood & Silver Ash Coffee Tables

This project was a bit of a change for me, as recently, I've been making mainly boxes, apart from a coffee table for Create from a Crate earlier this year. Previously, I've made four boxes for the clients, and when they asked me to build a set of coffee tables for their new house I jumped at the chance.
I know they have unconventional tastes, so their house was no surprise. Firstly, the ceiling isn't horizontal; secondly, only half the corners are right angles. There are other interesting aspects, but these two were to have an immediate effect on the design.
The brief was for a set of coffee tables that could be used individually, or arranged in different layouts depending on the mood and number of guests. I did a couple of designs, and we settled on this one. The angles of the tables match the angles of the house.
The initial plan was for a 'flagstone' pattern on the top panels, but in practice this looked too busy, so we went for silver ash. The frame is coachwood, which seems to work well with the colour of the walls. The finish is Livos Kunos oil, which I worked up to close to a gloss finish.
I delivered the tables today, and we played around with the arrangement of the tables. The clients are happy, I'm happy and the tables seem to be happy in their new home.

That is some nice work Alex. The flexibility is great, but using the same angles really it steps up a level I would say.

    Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Iain. It did mean a couple of extra jigs to make the legs.

Alex, what an absolutely stunning result. As usual the workmanship is faultless.
Can you give us some details of the construction? Is the Silver Ash top a veneer? What about those unusual legs?

Thanks gents. I took photos as I went, so hope to put together a decent WIP.
The top is a thick (~2mm) veneer on 9mm ply, with similar thickness southern silky oak (because I had plenty of it) veneer underneath.
The original design had single legs at each corner, but they didn't look quite right, so I re-drew them as they are. This has the side benefit of putting the mortises for the legs on either side of the join, which could otherwise be a point of weakness.
Making the dowels for the legs was interesting. I've never had much luck with the traditional method of driving a piece of wood through a steel plate, so made them using a 5mm rad. router cutter to round over a 10mm square rod.

When we were discussing a design that would suit the house, I asked if thet tabletops really had to be horizontal.

I really like the way you made them different without being way different. I liked the triangular crate tables too. These have the same idea but end up looking quite different. It's great to see someone doing interesting stuff. I'm looking forward to seeing the legs close up.

Мне это очень нравится. Жаль, что я не могу себе представить, потому что это слишком сложно!

    Brilliant!

A lot to like about these, design, material selection, execution, technical skills, ……. very refreshing to see master craftsmanship.

Спасибо, Тетис, я рад, что ты им нравишься. Как только они нарисованы на бумаге, это не сложно понять дизайн.

Thanks Mobyturns, but I think you're flattering me. More a journeyman than a master.
