Default Computer Program for Drawing Plans?

G'day All

Does anyone know of a computer program that I can use to design my furniture projects?

I love making furniture but I am not experienced enough to put my own plans on the drawing table. Nor am I experienced enough to work out how much wood and other materials I will need for my projects.

+1 for Google Sketchup.

Most cad programs have a steep learning curve, Sketchup less and it's free.

Draftsight is pretty good - and free - but is 2D only.
Sketchup gets a (it would get more if I could use in under Linux )

Hi Ravensilk,

I have recently started working with a free cad program called DoubleCAD XT. It works well with sketchup for setting out plans or parts schedules etc. You can check it out at DoubleCAD XT

I have been using cad programs for quite a few years now and have started combining cad with woodworking for my projects (I'm very much a newbie with woodwork . I have a few video tutorials on my website that runs through the basics of using doublecad and sketchup in particular but the principles are the same for most cad programs. You can find those at CraftyCAD

I haven't tried Draftsight but I will definitely check it out. Another free cad program I've just installed is called FelixCAD I am hoping to do a review and some videos on that one too. That one is at FelixCAD LT Features

Sketchup is worth familiarising yourself with in any case as it is great for roughing out designs quickly and easily or creating production drawings.

Regards,
Cam

Sketch Up!

I downloaded it only a couple of weeks ago to have a go at sketching up a bed project (Another Bed Thread). The linked thread has a couple of images of my design. I knocked that up in about 4hrs all up (Would probably be 2 now that I'm familiar with SketchUp)
