only two ??
shouldn't you have commissioned a total of five Doric Columns?
2 for potential use to support the rear of the lectern -- I think the practice is billed as "maintaining maximum design flexibility"
plus the obligatory 'spare' for when you have the unintentional major "oops" moment ...regards from Alberta, Canada

I’ve found a bit more time to work on the lectern. I don’t have enough of the forest red gum (FRG) milled so it was out with the chainsaw jig and back to the slabbed stash.

The columns were turned from amoora because turning this FRG would probably be lethal but I’m pretty happy with the unfinished colour match...

Is that a problem with your particular FRG as I was not aware of any issues with the timber. Are you talking catastrophic failure, danger or recalcitrance? Perhaps ignorance is bliss and I should have been very afraid in the past and maybe for the future.
Either way those columns look very smart. I sort of want to put them on something, but can't think of anything appropriate for the family heathen. Perhaps I could scale them up for a four poster bed: Even heathens sleep, although not without some troubled dreams.

Unfortunately and in spite of assurances to the contrary, after the tree was felled, it was VERY poorly slabbed and dried without stickers 😡. The request was to slab to 30mm thick and sticker for drying. It was baulked to 150 square and left in a tumble of 5 metre lengths! As such, it is full of splits and shakes that I think would make turning a life defining moment?

Not good I’m afraid. 😔 The blast gates have been quite busy and I’ve been scanning and cleaning up literally hundreds of aircraft photos for the 3 books that I’m helping to illustrate. The customer however asked the same question last week so I’ve had to get back into the saddle and get on with it. I also need to slab some more of the timber and the current rain is holding that up.

OK, I’m back on deck!
I’ve nearly finished the 4 projects that have taken me away from the lectern for a couple of months and so I started on it again today .......... only to have the local power turned off at midday for “essential work”!
Hopefully Bunnings still has power?
I needed to create a base upon which all will be built but there’s a couple of dimensions that can’t be resolved until I see some of the proportions ( I guess that would be yet another benefit of SketchUp?) so I’ve come up with this adjustable base where all the pieces can be slid along the diagonals to change width, depth and location of the columns..

...... and I’ll domino it all together when the proportions are set.
The next step should be quicker that the couple of months taken before this?

I made more progress today BUT when every piece of timber used has to be chainsaw milled from slabs and then dressed, progress can be glacial! I milled the timber for the side panels and the heavily patterned timber to wrap around the very visible lower platform. I also milled the timber for the frames for the side panels. It mightn’t look much but when added to the picture frames I’m making ........ I’m knackered!

I know FRG can be challenging, but the way it comes up with perseverance makes it all worthwhile. Looking good.

Fletty,
Progress,is still progress even if there just tiny steps, tho it looks like you progressed quite well.
Like Paul said the Forest Red Gum will come up beautiful.
Cheers Matt.

If you find your current stock too difficult, I have a 4 metre x 200 x 200 baulk of FRG in the shed if you need some. I've had it for at least nine years so it should be well seasoned.

Today, either side of a baby shower (since when have men started being invited to baby showers?) I marked up the ‘Mickey Mouse’ base, machined, glued, fitted dominos and clamped it. The glue was drying while the baby shower was rocking, I made a ply template and used it to refine the inside shape before routing a radius on the top edge. This gave a nice base to the columns and ties them back to the main body.....

Tomorrow I start on the torsion box which sits on top of the columns and sides and hopefully sand and put the first coat of WOP on the base, sides and columns 🤞a rock is an obsolete tool ......... until you don’t have a hammer!
