Default curved mango slab coffee table WIP

I milled a small mango about 18 months ago, been air drying since, I put the slabs into the kiln (mainly as a first trial run, only took 5 days to finish off), the log had a distinct s shape to it, I milled it so as to get s shaped slabs, enough blurb so to the pics, which look a bit gray, I took them outside so flash didn't go off, it was overcast

My plan is to make two coffee tables from the 4 slabs by joining two slabs following the curves in the slabs,

I had to experiment with a bit of trial and error to determine a suitable radius to suit the curves in the slabs, I settled on 600mm, I made a template then marked this on the slab,

I rough cut to the chalkline, the jigsaw was making hard work of trying to chew thru 50 thick slab so I hacked into it with the power saw, the external curve came up ok but the internal curve was a bit rough cleaned up with hammer and chisel,
The two slabs together to see how it will look

The slabs were a bit rough so I passed the underside over the planer, I did one side then turned it around to do the other side, bit hit and miss but I wanted to remove the worst of the saw marks, I splashed a bit of metho on to show the grain,

Then a bit of work with the no6 to flatten to something acceptable, that gave my spindly arms a bit of a work out

Yeh, I reckon it should look alright too
A little more done today but not much to show for it, when I had both undersides flattened, I then marked the thickness of the slab on both edges to show what will be the top
    Attachment 169252

I then machined the bulk off the mat'l off the top side, while doing so the slab developed a bow, must be some tension there, I remember I had trouble when I milled them, so back to the no.6 and give the spindly arms a workout checking for wind and flatness as I go
    Attachment 169251

This is the topside, one with the flouros off and one with on, with them on it makes the colour a bit grey and hides some of the figure
    Attachment 169253Attachment 169254

The end treatment I'm not sure about yet, cut them off straight? one big curve? two or three small curves? also butterfly keys in the splits or just fill the gap?

Looks great, I like the steps. Cracks, take em or leave em, could benice just filled with some resin or put some some butterflys in. Don't think you can go wrong with this one.
    Fantastic

    Some really nice figure there.
How about something like this and i like butterfly keys for cracks and splits.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

    Thumbs up

Good looking timber there! Should look great when finished!

How about joining the two slabs with stainless rod, leaving a gap of say 10-12 mm?

I was thinking a half a circle on each end as one option but your suggestion has it offset from what I can see so we go from a blended curve to a pointy bit, I'm thinking that might look quite good , the overall shape will be a parallelogram kinda maybe

    A little more done....

Filling the cracks, what happens when the sticky tape doesn't stick, fixed with a board clamped on, scraping the resin with a Skarsten scraper

I picked up a melamine cover sheet from the local kitchen place, I marked full scale the curves and pivot points, checking the router cutter with the marked line, external curve, centre of curves, checking the cut with the line, internal curve, fitting the two slabs together, the spalting on the near end matches up nicely and masks the join well....pure luck that

For the router radius jig I use a piece of road sign channel, I have made up a range of attachments to use with the channel, one of which is a pivot point that I set to the radius required, along with stops for the internal and external curves, the difference being the diameter of the cutter
    Attachment 169535
but this doesn't allow me to make a gradual increase in depth of cut to the line on either curve and given the rough and irregular nature of my hacked out curves I needed to do something else, so I made some flip stops for the int and ext curves
    Attachment 169536Attachment 169537
they worked quite well and will get used elsewhere

That is a very impressive jig.
Nice job on the join. This is looking really good.
