Default Day bed...my first ever woodwork project

    Hi folks,

Well I have never touched a piece of timber, except to sit on it, or eat off it , so where I got the crazy idea I could make a day bed who knows. I explained to my husband what I wanted and he thought it was possible.

Wood was builders lumber $27, which I sanded back. The dowels were $32. Clock was $12 (I think). Routered in the tracks for the bed and biscuit jointed the ends. Also used brass bed bolts to screw some of the ends together.

Now there is one small problem. The hole for the clock is to big. Apart from the flamn' obvious solution ie get a new post for the top, is there anyway I can bog/fill in in about 1mm?

A pretty good first project. The clock is a nice feature. I cant see from the scale of the picture if the hole in the wood is visable or not. If the rim of the clock front hides the hole then I would just pack it with a bit of cardboard or something to stop it being loose in the hole. If it is bogged in then it will be hard to get it out for battery changes.

Well done! How about wrapping masking tape round the clock until it's a snug fit in the 'ole?

I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.

    Looks great .
How did you make the hole for the clock. If you used a hole saw ,put the "wheel " back in the clock hole, and use the next bigger hole saw to make a rebate about 3-4 mm deep . Glue a circular piece of ply or mdf into the rebate and then cut the correct size hole for the clock. Or if you don't have the correct size, use the next size down and rasp out the hole to suit the clock.

Is the clock there so that you know how long you have cat napped
I've just become an optimist . Iv'e made a 25 year plan -oopps I've had a few birthdays - better make that a 20 year plan

Stuff-ups are just a good opportunity to turn them into an extra bit of decoration. As Peter36 suggested, make the 'ole bigger - it needn't be round - square would do. But skip the ply - cut a piece of wood to fit neatly in the hole, then glue another, slightly larger piece, about 8 to 10mm to the front of it. Using the router, or just a chisel & sandpaper, make a nice chamfer or rounding all around this bit. Then redrill the clock hole the right size & stick it back on the rail - since you've already painted it, you won't be able to glue it on without scraping paint off, so you could use 4 small screws to hold it there.....

    Cheers,
    IW

    Default Thank you

Thanks folks, I have a lot of great ideas to work with now.

I have some lovely dark timber that may just do the trick and make a feature of my 'purpose made' boo boo.
