On the subject of mobiles and tablets at the dinner table, took this shot of a sign outside a cafe in Broken Hill last year.

I agree mobiles can be obtrusive and annoying but even though we don't even have a landline (one of the best things we ever did was give that away and I would never go back to one now) one of the least important things about my mobile to me is the fact that it is a telephone.
I make on average about one call a day and get maybe 2-3 from other folks, and I send about 2-3 texts a day, mainly to family members. I don't do email, web browsing etc with it unless I am away from my laptop and I need to find the location of something I forgot to write down before I left home. News, weather, Web stuff, etc all gets done on my laptop. I have a wireless BB dongle that travels with the laptop so I can do all this in most of the places I go to.
My mobile phone is number 1 for me a mobile audio platform in the form of music and audio books.
I listen to about 3 audio books a week mainly while walking the dogs, in the car, and laying awake at night.
It is my calculator via an old school HP 41CV emulator.
Then it's a part of my measuring systems, e.g. SPL meter, air flow and vibration analyser, tilt meter.
I use the camera a fair bit because its convenient but if I specifically want to take more than a couple of photos I will use an SLR.
Of course could purchase a specific/dedicated item to do each of these things but why spend more and have the clutter of all these. I can barely remember where my phone is let alone a dozen other devices.

Wow, Derek
Wow, Derek
You certainly struck a chord - 63 posts in two days!
And your I dislike "Likes" generated a hell of a lot of "likes".
Like others, for many reasons, I have hit the "like" button when I have wanted to acknowledge a post, but where I had nothing additional to add to the debate. Shorthand for thumbs up, what he said or simply nicely put.
On reflection, in many cases, perhaps the "thank you" button may have been equallly appropriate.

I guess it would make the site lose some revenue as it reduces posts, that would probably keep threads lower in gloogle search results and will show less affiliate links to non members.
I am a liker of the like button.

Hi Derek - how reassuring to read your post and to know that I'm not the only one with such thoughts. Recently I tried to encourage discussion posting a build of mine to both try to help and encourage beginners and to learn from those more expert than me. It can require quite an effort to document builds with photos and uploads. While I somewhat appreciated the likes, on balance it was very disappointing that there was almost no discussion - the post's intention wasn't at all about my (relatively basic) work being liked. I ended up not posting the final stages, which on reflection probably wasn't the best decision on my part.
Sometimes it can feel like the equivalent of trying to have a conversation with someone and just getting a vacant smile and a thumbs up in response. 'That's nice. Are we there yet?' Likes, while requiring some effort to click a mouse these days are becoming meaningless and must surely help to promote the narcissist in all of us, especially when posters actually ask viewers to click the Like button. I would vote for their removal if it came to that.
So thank you for your thoughts on the matter. Lively and vibrant discussions are surely what these forums were originally intended for and it would be great to see the return of more substance (such as in this thread!). End of my rant!
Cheers and thanks,
Dave

Dave, maybe you started your thread when there was a major sporting event going on in the country?
I've been thinking about what engenders discussion for a given thread or post, and have decided it's just too hard to pick! Particularly here in this section of the Forum, we have a very wide range of projects posted, and they vary from the basic to the elaborate. Some appear as simply a pic or two of "finished" work, & some as full WIPs with design philosophies and all the mistakes along the way thrown in. This is good, because beginners and experienced woodies alike can have a level to aspire to, & also see that everyone has their "oh dear!" moments . The responses sometimes reflect the quality or complexity of the project, but certainly not invariably. A post you think is straightforward may provoke an avalanche of contending replies, or vice versa. Sometimes the tone of a post itself is clearly inviting response/critique/discussion, sometimes they seem more like a simple 'there you go', but again, the response that ensues isn't necessarily related to what I 'read' as the tone or purpose of the original post. Don't feel like you have been singled out to be ignored, I've had more than one post sink without trace, whilst the amount of 'lively discussion' that some have provoked has surprised me.
So keep on posting, all of you - you'll have hits & misses like the rest of us........
Cheers,IW

Whether well honed woodworkers or especially beginners, it's about encouraging them and spurring them on to enjoy this great hobby more...
Just my 2bobs worth of encouragement because life isn't about me, it's about what I do for others...

I often treat my new threads on projects like seeing a psychologist.
Often it is just about oneself talking.
They will nod and acknowledge that you spoke, but proffer no opinion. This is how I often see likes.
If the "psychologist" sees something really wrong (a psychosis in my methods!) then I feel the group here will quickly correct me

Codswallop Button
Hi Guys
This lively discussion on the like button got me thinking about the possibility of even more emotive buttons.
Having re-read a few of my own posts - post in haste, repent at leisure - I think there may be a need for a codswallop button.
Cheers

I say Derek! You've certainly issued a goodly quantity of likes and thanks in this thread! As I understand it, you are pretty busy with work right now, and a quick like or thanks shows the contributors that you are at least reading the thread, paying attention, and appreciating the various comments even though you may not have time to write something..........
Need we say any more?

Of course, Brett ... but I never said to stop Likes, only that I hoped that they did not stop readers responding with opinion or comments. Use Likes but, as I am doing, respond as well if you can.
