Oh yeah. It's as much a keeper as any, if not moreso. It probably rears its head once per build on average. Every time I use it I have the distinct feeling of having my cake and eating it too

I know what you mean about it being too nice (at risk of sounding like I'm boasting). I was concerned it would turn out looking like some kind of fancy cabinet that just happened to have metal panels. This is a big part, the foremost reason in fact, that I opted for an oil finish (which I failed to mention) instead of shellac. I really would like to see how this Acacia polishes up, but that will have to wait til the next build. It would've simply been inappropriate for this.

I also considered pine (well, maybe Ash or some other hardwood) and paint, but I shrugged that off pretty quickly. I came very, very close to nailing the front onto the carcase, and after I chose not to, I still considered adding some nails after the fact for effect. I'm glad I didn't. I think it turned out looking country enough. I think the porcelain pulls add to that effect to a limited degree. If I could find non-zinc coated, slotted head screws I would've considered them, along with steel hinges, but brass was ultimately the call and I think it works.

I feel like, and kind of anticipated this during the build and materials selection process, that this is going to be a piece of furniture which ages very well. I think that after the brass tarnishes and the panels oxidize it will really come into its own.

So then my hypothetical but almost assuredly ungrateful children will get to enjoy it!

Such is the way of things...

    Cheers,
    Luke

Personally I like your piece to remain this way but I know that is not practical.

I used to look after my tools to the degree that I put them back in the original packaging then realised that this is impractical for second hand tools. I guess I have mellowed a little bit.
