Framed planar top for a campaign desk
I made a campaign desk a few years ago and now want to make a new one in an attempt to correct earlier mistakes. I used a sheet of 20mm jointed pine from Bunnings, surrounded the panel with an inlay of Toona and completed the carcase in Silky Oak. No surprises to find that a 1.5mm crack has appeared in the pine.
I still like the look of a smooth surface rather than some sort of frame and panel to allow movement. SO, I am thinking about laminating strips of 5mm thick Hoop Pine to either marine ply or MDF. I prefer ply to keep the weight down. If I used epoxy, do you think I could eliminate shrinkage? I could apply PU to both sides of the veneer to slow down moisture.
Has anyone else tried this?

If you like the look and are happy with the durability of hoop pine as a writing surface, I suggest you make the top from a piece of furniture grade hoop pine ply.
The Toona australis could be inlaid into the face as a piece of banding.regards from Alberta, Canada
